Behavior of Rio Sao Francisco Piranhas in Response to Changes in Space and Density

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Previous observations of Rio Sao Francisco piranhas (Pygocentrus piraya) at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo revealed frequent aggressive interactions, which were associated with the injury and death of some individuals. Fishes are known to increase aggressive behavior when available space is limited.

Vision at high latitudes: High sensitivity without specific boreal adaptations in photoreception in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.)

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The light climate at high latitudes, in particular the extended twilight of winter and the reduced diel variation in light level in midsummer and midwinter, potentially constrains visual function and the synchronisation of temporal organisation in polar species.
