— The energetics of photodynamic action is discussed in terms of oxidation potentials of sensitizing dye intermediates. The results are compared with rate constants and quantum yields for photodynamic oxidation of iodide ion, aromatic amino acids, and lysozyme in the presence of eosin Y.

Photosensitivity in the elderly

Photosensitivity to drugs and chemicals in the elderly is more prevalent due to more frequent use of medications. Phototoxic reactions to common, orally administered drugs such as diuretics, cardiac agents and antidiabetics may occur and the reactions may be remedied by discontinuing drug therapy.

Abstract Systemic injection of hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) in combination with visible light (red or blue‐green) delivered by laser was used to treat a patient with psoriasis. The psoriatic lesions responded vigorously to laser treatments, forming eschars by 1 week post irradiation.

This is a report of the occurrence of seizures or their equivalents induced by photic stimuli in a family of 5, one of whom, a 14-year-old girl, was the first to suggest the proper etiological common denominator for her own convulsive manifestations and for the less overt incidents in other members of the family.

Photosensitive Epilepsy

Although epilepsy remains an unsolved medical problem, there is a type of epilepsy known as 'photosensitive epilepsy' described in the medical literature that could serve as the window to understanding the pathophysiology of all epilepsies. Abstract—The chemical modification of rabbit muscle aldolase by coupling with diazotized p‐amino benzoate results in the preparation of a photosensitive enzyme. The photosensitivity is realized with the presence of arene diazothioether chromophores, due to the substitution on cysteine residues (eight groups per enzyme molecule).

The Drosophila "transient receptor potential" channel is the prototypical TRP channel, belonging to and defining the TRPC subfamily. Together with a second TRPC channel, trp-like (TRPL), TRP mediates the transducer current in the fly's photoreceptors. TRP and TRPL are also implicated in olfaction and Malpighian tubule function.

UV irradiation (365 nm) of air-saturated methanol solutions of 20 drugs absorbing in the 300--400 nm region gave rise to oxygen uptake, as determined with a polarographic oxygen electrode. The drugs were tested for photosensitizing capability by either a Type I (free radical) or a Type II (single molecular oxygen) mechanism.
