Phraseology of a language is without a doubt an aspect of language that is by far the richest in imagery. Images serve as mechanisms for idiom comprehension, even in cases of idioms that are opaque at first sight. The ability to understand modified idioms serves as a further confirmation of this claim.

The paper focuses on different aspects of polysemy in phraseology and examines the role of cognitive mechanisms in the process of creating polysemy. Special attention will be paid to conceptual metaphor and metonymy and their role in creating the polysemy of idiom constituents, as well as to different effects they may produce.
