Phyllodes tumors

Phyllodes tumors are rare lesions of the breast with unpredictable behavior. A review of 18 patients with phyllodes tumors was performed to determine if pathologic and cellular characteristics correlated with clinical behavior and to determine the influence of the extent of the operation performed on clinical outcome.

Phyllodes tumors are rare primary breast neoplasms graded as benign, borderline, or malignant based on pathology characterization of the stromal component. Core-needle biopsy is recommended as the first diagnostic step for breast lesions suspicious for phyllodes.

To better identify prognostic factors for local control and survival, as well as the role of different therapeutic options, for phyllodes tumors, a rare fibroepithelial neoplasm of the breast.Data from 443 women treated between 1971 and 2003 were collected from the Rare Cancer Network. The median age was 40 years (range, 12-87 years).

[Phyllodes tumors].

A review of mammary phyllodes tumors is presented. Clinical, radiological and cytological features are treated, with special emphasis on the histopathological grading system and prognostic indicators. Other analytical methods are described: immunohistochemistry, hormonal receptors study, flow cytometry and electron microscopy.

[Phyllodes breast tumors].

Phyllodes tumors represent a particular class in breast pathology. They are defined as bi-tissue, fibro-epithelial tumors, similar to fibro-adenomas, but their connective tissue component is greatly predominant. They are infrequent as they represent only 3% of breast tumors.

Cystosarcoma phyllodes tumors.

Of 106 females treated surgically for cystosarcoma phyllodes, 20 had one or more local recurrences, while seven other patients had "pseudorecurrences" in that the histologic findings showed benign disease of the breast. Histologic transformation into a histologically more aggressive lesion was noted in three patients.
