A new species of Middle Miocene sperm whale of the genus Scaldicetus (Cetacea; Physeteridae) from Shiga‐mura, Japan

open access: yesIsland Arc, 1994
Abstract A nearly complete skeleton of a fossil sperm whale from the Middle Miocene age Bessho Formation at Shiga‐mura, Nagano Prefecture, the most complete fossil physeterid skeleton found in Japan, is here named Scaldicetus shigensis, new species.

Understanding causes of morbidity and mortality in Southern Hemisphere small Odontoceti: a scoping review

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 55, Issue 2, April 2025.
This review identifies key causes of morbidity and mortality in Southern Hemisphere small Odontoceti, highlighting significant anthropogenic threats and the enhanced need for conservation strategies. Key findings include high rates of entanglements and a diverse range of infectious pathogens. Abstract Marine mammals serve as sentinels for environmental

Cetáceos fósiles (Mammalia, Odontoceti, Eurhinodelphionoidea, Inioidea, Physeterioidea) de la Formación Curré, Mioceno Superior (Hemphilliano Temprano Tardío) de Costa Rica Fossil Cetacea (Mammalia, Odontoceti, Eurhinodelphinoidea, Inioidea, Physeterioidea) of the Curré Formation, Upper Miocene (Early-Late Hemphillian) of Costa Rica

Koristocetus pescei gen. et sp. nov., a diminutive sperm whale (Cetacea: Odontoceti: Kogiidae) from the late Miocene of Peru [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Among odontocetes, members of the family Kogiidae (pygmy and dwarf sperm whales) are known as small-sized and in many respects enigmatic relatives of the great sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus.

Killer Whale Orcinus orca (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mammalia: Cetartiodactyla: Delphinidae) predation on Sperm Whales Physeter macrocephalus Linnaeus, 1758 (Mammalia: Cetartiodactyla: Physeteridae) in the Gulf of Mannar, Sri Lanka

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2020
To date in Sri Lankan waters, there has been limited research on Killer Whales.  These animals have been recorded almost all around the island, except in the northernmost waters and in Palk Bay.  The highest observed concentrations are from the northeastern, south/southwestern and northwestern coastal waters of Sri Lanka.

A pan‐cetacean MHC amplicon sequencing panel developed and evaluated in combination with genome assemblies

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 24, Issue 5, July 2024.
Abstract The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic gene family that is crucial in immunity, and its diversity can be effectively used as a fitness marker for populations. Despite this, MHC remains poorly characterised in non‐model species (e.g., cetaceans: whales, dolphins and porpoises) as high gene copy number variation ...

Early prey intake of a short‐finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus Gray, 1846, Cetacea: Delphinidae) in the Canary Islands

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2024.
The short‐finned pilot whale, Globicephala macrorhynchus in the Canary Islands. Stomach contents, trophic markers, skin isotopic ratios of nitrogen (δ15N: 15N/14N) and carbon (δ13C: 13C/12C), and fatty acid profiles of the blubber of a short‐finned pilot whale were analyzed to obtain the insights in their early hunting behavior.
