This article considers the role of physics in transforming cosmology into a research field which relies heavily on fundamental physical knowledge. It begins with an overview of astrophysics and the state of physical cosmology prior to the introduction of relativity, followed by a discussion of Albert Einstein’s application of his new theory of ...

Cosmology and particle physics
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1982The cosmic connections between physics on the very largest and very smallest scales are reviewed with an emphasis on the symbiotic relation between elementary particle physics and cosmology. After a review of the early Universe as a cosmic accelerator, various cosmological and astrophysical constraints on models of particle physics are outlined.

Cosmology and Particle Physics
1985In the past five years or so progress in both elementary particle physics and in cosmology has become increasingly dependent upon the interplay between the two disciplines. On the particle physics side, the SU(3) c × SU(2) L × U(1)Y model seems to very accurately describe the interactions of quarks and leptons at energies below, say, 103 GeV.
