It must have been in an unthinking moment that I promised to speak about ‘the’ model in physics. For even in physics models of quite different types are used for quite different purposes. Rather than talk about ‘the’ model, I will take a few examples of some types of models in physics.

Physicality of the Little model
Physical Review A, 1986We formulate the dynamics of the Little model at T=0 in simple mathematical terms. We use this to prove that no cycles of length greater than 2 exist in the model. For a subset of systems only 1-cycles exist, and an extensive quantity can be defined.

Abstract Physicists tend to use models of various kinds to aid their understanding of complicated physical situations. The models differ by the degree of simplification or exaggeration they involve, according to the purpose for which they are used. It is suggested that one might distinguish seven different types.

A new physical model of all-out sprinting is presented. The first models for the applied forces in the block, drive and maintenance phases, as well as for braking forces, are proposed and are based on experimental observations. The applied forces and the aerodynamic drag forces along with the speed and position of the sprinter are calculated by the ...

PHYSICAL AND HYBRID MODELS: PHYSICAL MODELS AND COMPONENTS
2010The complexity of the circulatory system makes its analysis very difficult or sometimes impossible in clinical environment. Moreover, external actions such as mechanical circulatory or ventilatory assistance applied in cases of cardiovascular insufficiency cause the situation to be even more difficult to be analyzed.

We discuss a variety of roles for diagrams in helping with reasoning, focusing in particular on their role as physical models of states of affairs, much like an architectural model of a building or a 3-D molecular model of a chemical compound. We discuss the concept of a physical model for a logical sentence, and the role played by the causal structure
