Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Quine, Ontology, and Physicalism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Quine's views on ontology and naturalism are well-known but rarely considered in tandem. According to my interpretation the connection between them is vital. I read Quine as a global epistemic structuralist. Quine thought we only ever know objects qua solutions to puzzles about significant intersections in observations.

Reasoning about physical processes in buildings through component stereotypes

open access: yesData-Centric Engineering
Buildings employ an ensemble of technical systems like those for heating and ventilation. Ontologies such as Brick, IFC, SSN/SOSA, and SAREF have been created to describe such technical systems in a machine-understandable manner.
