Attractiveness of Melon Genotypes to Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) Mediated by Foliar Morphological and Biochemical Traits

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
This study identifies melon genotypes resistant to Bemisia tabaci by integrating morphological and biochemical leaf traits. Using free‐choice and no‐choice assays, we demonstrate that resistance is primarily mediated by antixenosis. Genotypes CNPH 11‐1071‐43, CNPH 06‐1047‐343, CNPH 13‐1076, and BG MEL 16 significantly reduced whitefly settling and ...

Birch Leaves as a Minefield: Do Trichomes Mediate Neonate Caterpillar Site Selection?

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated whether neonate Drepana arcuata caterpillars select leaf sites based on trichome distribution. Specifically, we assessed where larvae establish on leaves, quantified trichome distribution on leaves, and tested whether neonates avoid leaf trichomes. Neonates preferentially established and fed on areas with fewer trichomes, especially the

Host Detection by Cuckoo Bumblebees: Choice Experiments Reveal Non‐Visual Cues Support Host Detection, but Accuracy Is Low

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Female Bombus vestalis cuckoo bumblebees were introduced to a flight arena containing four identical opaque boxes, featuring slits to release volatiles from the bumblebees inside. When only one box contained a developing host colony, the cuckoos were able to locate their hosts among the four boxes with 66.2% accuracy.

Plant Growth and Arthropod Assemblage Metrics on Sapindus saponaria Fertilized With Dehydrated Municipal Sewage Sludge

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Under the conditions evaluated, dehydrated municipal sewage sludge increased branches per plant and ground cover in Sapindus saponaria and increased cumulative arthropod observations and species richness in selected groups. Exploratory multivariate patterns did not demonstrate direct causal plant–arthropod relationships.

Preference‐performance relationship in the thistle tortoise beetle: Implications for its realised host range

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
There was a positive relationship between adult preference and larval performance. However, the strength of the relationship ranged from weak to strong depending on the measure of adult preference. The adult beetle showed substantial flexibility in host plant selection and equal performance across most thistle hosts.
