Physicochemical characteristics of chitosan molecules: Modeling and experiments

open access: yesAdvances in Colloid and Interface Science
Chitosan, a biocompatible polysaccharide, finds a wide range of applications, inter alia as an antimicrobial agent, stabilizer of food products, cosmetics, and in the targeted delivery of drugs and stem cells. This work represents a comprehensive review of the properties of chitosan molecule and its aqueous solutions uniquely combining theoretical ...

Engineering Strategies for Stable and Long‐Life Alkaline Zinc‐Based Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Alkaline zinc‐based flow batteries face persistent challenges from unstable zinc deposition, including dendrite growth, passivation, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, which severely limit cycling stability. Current research addresses these issues through coordinated electrode structuring, electrolyte regulation, and membrane design to control zinc ...

Extraction kinetics and physicochemical characteristics of Colombian propolisExtraction kinetics and physicochemical characteristics of Colombian propolis

open access: yes, 2023
Propolis, a resinous matter collected by Apis mellifera bees from exudates of plants, exhibits different biological properties, such as antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and antioxidant activities. Standardization of the extraction of their bioactive compounds is a complex issue in particular for rural regions in developing countries due to the ...

Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors for Probing Free Radical Biology

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Free radicals play key roles in cellular signaling and disease but remain difficult to measure in living systems. Nanodiamonds (NDs) with nitrogen‐vacancy (NV) centers enable quantum sensing of local magnetic noise via T₁ relaxometry, providing nondestructive radical detection in living cells.

Environmental Pollution Mitigation: The Chemical Transformation of Residual Frying Oil into Biodiesel

open access: yesRecycling
Currently, residual frying oil has three purposes: it is used again in the preparation of fried foods, mixed with new vegetable oil, which can cause cardiovascular disease in the consumer; it is collected by government institutions, without having an ...

Elucidating the Role of Surface Ligands on the Oxidative Etching of Au Bipyramids During Photothermia Using Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gold bipyramids can act as efficient plasmonic nanoheaters, but they often reshape during laser heating. This study shows that oxygen nanobubbles drive oxidative etching and that surface ligands control stability. CTAB‐ and citrate‐coated particles blunt and lose optical performance, whereas polystyrene sulfonate preserves shape and heating by ...

Metachromatic Butterfly Bile Pigments for Multi‐Level Optical Security Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐derived optical security materials are manufactured by embedding butterfly‐based pigments in polymer films. Tunable color and fluorescence responses arise from concentration‐controlled metachromasy, enabling spatially encoded patterns with distinct visible, UV‐active, and spectral signatures.

Biocompatible but Antibacterial Mechanism of Graphene Oxide for Sustainable Antibiotics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene oxide (GO) exhibits selective antibacterial activity through specific interactions between its oxygen functional groups and bacterial membrane phospholipid POPG, causing membrane destabilization while maintaining biocompatibility. Model membrane studies and infected wound models in mice and pigs demonstrate effective bacterial suppression and ...
