The role of atmosphere and ocean physical processes in ENSO [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2009
Abstract. We examine the behaviour of the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in an ensemble of global climate model simulations with perturbations to parameters in the atmosphere and ocean components respectively. The influence of the uncertainty in these parametrisations on ENSO are investigated systematically.

Atmospheric Optical Turbulence Characteristics over the Ocean Relevant to Astronomy and Atmospheric Physics [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Due to the space and time constraints of turbulence measurement equipment and the experiment scene, it is difficult to obtain the atmosphere refractive index structure constant over the ocean. In this paper, the characteristics of atmospheric optical turbulence in offshore and open ocean conditions are summarized by analyzing the meteorological data ...

Reducing Climatology Bias in an Ocean–Atmosphere CGCM with Improved Coupling Physics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2005
Abstract The cold tongue in the tropical Pacific extends too far west in most current ocean–atmosphere coupled GCMs (CGCMs). This bias also exists in the relatively high-resolution SINTEX-F CGCM despite its remarkable performance of simulating ENSO variations.

Tropical Atlantic Mixed Layer Buoyancy Seasonality: Atmospheric and Oceanic Physical Processes Contributions [PDF]

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
This study investigates the physical processes controlling the mixed layer buoyancy using a regional configuration of an ocean general circulation model. Processes are quantified by using a linearized equation of state, a mixed-layer heat, and a salt budget. Model results correctly reproduce the observed seasonal near-surface density tendencies.

Biogeochemistry and Physics of the Southern Ocean-Atmosphere System Explored With Data Science [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Abstract. The Southern Ocean is a critical component of Earth’s climate system, but its remoteness makes it challenging to develop a holistic understanding of its processes from the small to the large scale. As a result, our knowledge of this vast region remains largely incomplete.

On the role of physical modelling in atmospheric and oceanic forecast [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Fluid Mechanics, 2008
We discuss how physical modelling can be used to reproduce atmospheric or oceanic flows in the laboratory. The similarity conditions for the effects of density stratification and Earth rotation are first presented. Then examples of results obtained on the large ‘Coriolis’ platform in Grenoble are described.

Methods for assimilation of observational data in problems of the physics of the atmosphere and the ocean [PDF]

open access: yesИзвестия Российской академии наук. Физика атмосферы и океана, 2019
In this paper we review and analyze approaches to data assimilation in geophysical hydrodynamics problems, starting with the simplest successive schemes of assimilation and ending with modern variational methods. Special attention is paid to the the study of the problem of variational assimilation in the weak formulation and construction of covariance ...
