A Reconstruction of Structure of the Atom and Its Implications for General Physics Textbooks: A History and Philosophy of Science Perspective

open access: closedJournal of Science Education and Technology, 2004
Recent research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presentation of the Thomson, Rutherford, and Bohr models of the atom in general physics textbooks based on criteria derived from history and philosophy of science.

History and philosophy of science in an undergraduate physics course

open access: closedPhysics Today, 1955
For five years a new subject has been taught within the Natural Sciences Tripos at Cambridge University. I have been associated with the development of this course, and I should like to tell you something of our objectives, and of the difficulties we have experienced.

Pierre Duhem, the History and Philosophy of Physics, and the Teaching of Physics

Physics in Perspective, 1999
The distinguished physicist and historian and philosopher of science Pierre Duhem (1861–1916) not only taught physics, but also worked out in his Aim and Structure of Physical Theory a philosophical analysis of physics. Duhem's analysis offers important suggestions about how physics progresses and also how physics should be taught.

History and philosophy of science in physics education

International Journal of Science Education, 1990
Physics education in the Danish upper secondary school system has undergone a major reform, starting in August 1988. The earlier science‐centred physics curriculum has given way to a presentation of physics as a human activity, one way of obtaining this aim being through a compulsory introduction to elements of the history and philosophy of science ...

Physics Teachers’ Challenges in Using History and Philosophy of Science in Teaching

Science & Education, 2014
The inclusion of the history and philosophy of science (HPS) in science teaching is widely accepted, but the actual state of implementation in schools is still poor. This article investigates possible reasons for this discrepancy. The demands science teachers associate with HPS-based teaching play an important role, since these determine teachers ...

Experts' Views on Using History and Philosophy of Science in the Practice of Physics Instruction

Science & Education, 2001
This study examines the views of a representative sample of experts in physics, physics education and history and philosophy of science (HPS) on the incorporation of HPS based materials in physics instruction. The obtained spectrum of views addresses three areas: the rationale to include HPS, the most appropriate ways of doing so, and anticipated ...

Collateral Readings in the Philosophy and History of Physics for the Introductory Science and Engineering Physics Course

open access: closedAmerican Journal of Physics, 1966
The standard introductory course for the science and engineering students is too often completely crammed with formulas and problems and gives the beginning student no idea whatsoever of the excitement of physics, and of its philosophy, history, and research frontier.

History, Philosophy, Physics, and Future Directions of Aircraft Propulsion System/Inlet Integration [PDF]

open access: closedVolume 2: Turbo Expo 2004, 2004
This work provides a historical perspective of the developments of propulsion system inlet/engine integration. The flow physics of inlet distortion are discussed, along with the stability effects on the engine compression systems. Throughout the document, both commercial and military applications are considered.

A Spontaneous Physics Philosophy on the Concept of Ether Throughout the History of Science: Birth, Death and Revival

open access: closedFoundations of Science, 2013
In the course of the history of science, some concepts have forged theoretical foundations, constituting paradigms that hold sway for substantial periods of time. Research on the history of explanations of the action of one body on another is a testament to the periodic revival of one theory in particular, namely, the theory of ether.
