Coral reef fish visual adaptations to a changing world

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Coral reef ecosystems show fluctuations in their prevailing light environment in response to both regular (e.g. between seasons) and more prevalent stochastic events (e.g. human‐induced sediment runoff).

Marine heatwaves amplify benthic community metabolism and solute flux in a seafloor heating experiment

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The magnitude and frequency of marine heatwaves are increasing and predicted to intensify, but our ability to understand the real‐world effects on vital benthic ecosystems is lagging behind.

Warming strengthens food web effects of predator phenotypic variation

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Intraspecific variation modifies ecological processes and ecosystem functioning. Still, we know relatively little of how the nature and strength of ecosystem effects caused by intraspecific variation may interact with climate change.

Food web trophic control modulates tropical Atlantic reef ecosystems response to marine heat wave intensity and duration

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
In this study we showed that trophic control modulates the effects of marine heatwaves (MHWs) on species biomass dynamics in a tropical and pristine Atlantic reef ecosystem. Our study provides insights into how the strength of predator–prey interactions may generate different outcomes in face of intensified and prolonged MHWs. Abstract Marine heatwaves
