Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Unveils Phytoplankton Succession in Hurricane Wakes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Hyperspectral satellite data from the NASA mission, PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem), can be used to investigate the effects of hurricanes on phytoplankton composition. Results from four Atlantic Ocean hurricanes show the expected increases in chlorophyll‐a concentration associated with deepening of the mixed layer depth (MLD).

Responses of Water Quality Parameters to El Niño in the Curuá‐Una Reservoir, Amazon Basin

open access: yesCLEAN – Soil, Air, Water, Volume 54, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The El Niño phenomenon in the Amazon is associated with extreme drought and lower atmospheric humidity, leading to environmental disturbances, such as wildfires and decreased river levels. An exceptionally intense El Niño occurred between 2015 and 2016, reaching historic magnitudes.

Continental scale metagenomics reveals Microcystis‐induced synchrony among aquatic taxa is exacerbated by trophic cascades

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 10, October 2026.
Harmful Microcystis proliferation severely threatens aquatic ecosystems globally, but its impacts on food‐web stability remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed 1309 metagenomic samples from freshwater ecosystems across China to investigate how Microcystis abundance affects synchrony among taxa in multi‐trophic food webs (from bacteriophages to ...

Determination of numerical scale of water quality based on the algal bloom potential in the southern Caspian Sea-Goharbaran (Mazandaran Provience)

open access: yes‬‭Majallah-i ̒Ilmī-i Shīlāt-i Īrān, 2018
A growing human population and increased demand for protein will made marine aquaculture inevitable. Water quality monitoring is important due to the great interactions between water quality and aquaculture activities.

Transient shifts in Bering Sea shelf phytoplankton size structure in response to wind‐induced mixing

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters
Phytoplankton community size structure is a key attribute that influences pelagic trophic energy transfer and the vertical flux of organic matter to benthic food webs.
