Earlier spring may explain dominance of the slow‐growing dinoflagellate Naiadinium polonicum over the cyanobacterium Microcystis during a heatwave

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Global warming and extreme weather events have been linked to a rise in cyanobacterial blooms, which threaten water quality and ecosystem services. However, during an extreme hot and dry summer, Microcystis was outcompeted by a dinoflagellate, Naiadinium polonicum, in a drinking water lake in southern Sweden.

Bridging the gap between genomic, phenotypic, and modeling data in picophytoplankton–virus interactions

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract We present a comprehensive synthesis of recent developments in methodological approaches to combine experimental and genomic studies of picophytoplankton–virus interactions. This synthesis will not only enhance our understanding of these relationships but also stimulate new hypotheses for the interpretation of metagenomic data and enrich ...

Spatial and temporal trends of phytoplankton and physiochemical variables in a hypertrophic, monomictic lake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Spatial and temporal variations in the physical, chemical and biological composition of Lake Ōkaro were measured over 16 months. Lake Ōkaro is a small (0.32 km2) hypertrophic, monomictic lake located in the Central Volcanic Zone of the North Island, New ...

Improved primary production and gross respiration measurements using the H218O technique with membrane inlet mass spectrometry and introduction of a small volume–uniform irradiance incubation chamber

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract An improvement in the H218O technique for phytoplankton gross primary productivity (GPP), net primary productivity (NPP), and gross respiration (GR) is described that reduces cost, labor, and time over the traditional isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) method.

Phytoplankton dynamics of the river nene, England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The distribution of suspended algae was investigated in a 69-km length of a small lowland river in the UK, the Nene (annual median discharge at km 91.7 =6 m(^3) s(^-1).

Surface primary producer phenology in Dease Strait, NU, Canada, examined using submersed oceanographic sensors and satellite remote sensing

open access: yesArctic Science
Thinning sea ice cover and earlier melt in the Arctic impact primary producer (PP) phenology, causing earlier ice algal bloom termination and phytoplankton bloom commencement.

On the Dynamical Behavior of Toxic-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton Model with Delay

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2015
A toxin producing phytoplankton-zooplankton model with inhibitory exponential substrate and time delay has been formulated and analyzed. Since the liberation of toxic substances by phytoplankton species is not an instantaneous process but is mediated by ...

Nutrients in an oligotrophic boundary current: Evidence of a new role for the Leeuwin Current [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
New observations along the continental shelf of Western Australia provide a novel explanation for the established ~60years relationship between Leeuwin Current (LC) strength and greater winter nitrate concentrations at 32°S plus the inter-annual ...

Temporal Coherence of Chlorophyll a during a Spring Phytoplankton Bloom in Xiangxi Bay of Three-Gorges Reservoir, China

open access: yes, 2009
Algal bloom phenomenon was defined as "the rapid growth of one or more phytoplankton species which leads to a rapid increase in the biomass of phytoplankton", yet most estimates of temporal coherence are based on yearly or monthly sampling frequencies ...

Freshwater Biodiversity Research in Brazil: Trends from a Systematic Review and Topic Modeling

open access: yesInternational Review of Hydrobiology, Volume 111, Issue 2, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Brazil is a megadiverse country that hosts six major biomes and a vast freshwater network. Despite this richness, research on freshwater biodiversity has been heterogeneous across regions, communities, and time, leaving significant knowledge gaps.
