Biological control in the Maltese Islands - past initiatives and future programmes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Past records of introduced predators and parasites for biological control programmes in the Maltese Islands are reviewed. Literature on this subject is very limited, difficult to obtain and to confirm.

Diet-Induced Developmental and Morphological Plasticity in a Thelytokous Predatory Mite Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study investigated how variation in prey consumption influences immature development and adult morphometric traits in the predatory mite Amblyseius herbicolus. Mites that ate more prey attained a larger size at maturity but did not develop more rapidly. Several morphometric traits were also significantly influenced by diet.

Effects of leaf domatia on intraguild interactions between Amblyseius swirskii and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

open access: yesPersian Journal of Acarology, 2022
Leaf domatia as a habitat-produced structure is considered to moderate the interaction intensity among guild parties. We studied whether domatia of sweet pepper (Capsicum annum) leaves could reduce the adverse effects of predation of a phytoseiid on ...

Effect of familiarity and taxonomic traits on male mating precedence in Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

open access: yesPersian Journal of Acarology, 2016
Male competition to fertilize the eggs of females would result in conflicts between the members of one sex and evolution of secondary behavioral and morphological characters.

When the ground cover brings guests: is Anaphothrips obscurus a friend or a foe for the biological control of Tetranychus urticae in clementines? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Biological control of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), a key pest of clementines, can be improved in this crop with the establishment of a ground cover of Festuca arundinacea Schreber (Poaceae).

Efficiency of Phytoseiulus longipes Evans as a control agent of Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tetranychidae) on screenhouse tomatoes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The spider mite Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard can cause severe damage to tomato crops. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes Evans was recently reported in association with T. evansi in Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The objective

Proximate mechanisms of drought resistance in Phytoseiulus persimilis eggs [PDF]

open access: yesExperimental and Applied Acarology, 2019
AbstractUnder drought stress,Phytoseiulus persimilisfemales are able to lay drought-resistant eggs through an adaptive maternal effect. The mechanisms making these eggs drought resistant still remain to be investigated. For this purpose, we studied the physiological differences between drought-resistant and drought-sensitive eggs.

Sublethal effect of Abamectin in the functional response of the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot) on Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Phytoseiidae, Tetranychidae)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2018
The biological control used for the control of Tetranychus urticae (Koch) is the predator mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot). It is important to the know the effects of acaricides on the biological behavior the Abamectin on the functional ...

Variation in Herbivory-induced Volatiles Among Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Varieties has Consequences for the Attraction of Carnivorous Natural Enemies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In response to herbivory by arthropods, plants emit herbivory-induced volatiles that attract carnivorous enemies of the inducing herbivores. Here, we compared the attractiveness of eight cucumber varieties (Cucumis sativus L.) to Phytoseiulus persimilis ...

Response of Amblyseius swirskii to deltamethrin. [PDF]

open access: yesPest Manag Sci
The analysis of toxicological and molecular data reveals target‐site as well as metabolic modifications associated with the resistance to deltamethrin in Amblyseius swirskii colonies. However, semi‐field assays show increased run‐off behavior after treatments with the same pesticide.
