Consortial brown tide − picocyanobacteria blooms in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba

Harmful Algae, 2018
A brown tide bloom of Aureoumbra lagunensis developed in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba during a period of drought in 2013 that followed heavy winds and rainfall from Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012. Based on satellite images and water turbidity measurements, the bloom appeared to initiate in January 2013. The causative species (A. lagunensis) was confirmed

Dynamics of picocyanobacteria in the Northern Adriatic Sea

Algological Studies/Archiv für Hydrobiologie, Supplement Volumes, 1996
Environmental parameters and picocyanobacteria were monitored along a offshore/inshore transect of stations in Gulf of Trrieste (Northerm Adriatic Sea) during 93/94. The role of hydro-chemical variables on the population dynamics of picocyanobacteria was described using statistical methods based on fuzzy set ...

Impact of viruses on heterotrophic bacterioplankton and picocyanobacteria in reservoirs

Doklady Biological Sciences, 2011
In aquatic ecosystems, viruses are considered to bean important factor controlling bacterio and phytoplankton abundance, production, and diversity andplay an important role in the biogeochemical cycles ofcarbon and other components [1]. Analysis of literature on ecology of aquatic viruses shows that, atpresent, viruses in freshwaters are less studied ...

Phylogenetic diversity of freshwater picocyanobacteria

2012
Picocyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes, coccoid or rod-shaped, with a cell diameter < 2 µm. They are common in lakes and oceans, and abundant across a wide spectrum of trophic conditions (Callieri et al 2012). The dominant genus of freshwater picocyanobacteria is Synechococcus.

Picocyanobacteria: the smallest cell-size cyanobacteria

2017
Picocyanobacteria, the smallest cell-size cyanobacteria, are numerous and ubiquitous in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. In freshwater, they are represented mainly by genera including Synechococcus, Cyanobium, and Synechocystis, and in marine waters, predominantly by Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus.

SOP 4. Analysis of picocyanobacteria abundance in epifluorescence microscopy

2017
Picocyanobacteria, the smallest cyanobacteria in the size range 0.2-2.0âEUR?μm, are both numerous and ubiquitous in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. Their contribution to primary production decreases with the increase of trophic level; however, they were shown to form persisting blooms in some eutrophicated coastal lagoons.

Picocyanobacteria photosynthetic efficiency under Daphnia grazing pressure

2004
Daphnia hyalina was used to assess the impact of zooplankton on the photosynthetic activity of picocyanobacteria. A phosphorus-limited laboratory system was designed, composed of 3µm filtered lake water with natural assemblages to which non-axenic Synechococcus sp. was added.
