Parsing visual languages with picture layout grammars

Journal of Visual Languages & Computing, 1991
Visual programming languages are languages for programming using visual expressions. Picture layout grammars are a mechanism for defining the syntax of visual languages. They allow the specification of both the logical structure and two-dimensinal layout of a visual language. Spatial parsing is the process of analysing an input picture to determine its

Picturing Silence: The Visual Grammar of Speak: The Graphic Novel

Children's Literature in Education, 2021
The framework of visual grammar (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2006, via Serafini, 2014) is used to examine the artwork of Laurie Halse Anderson and Emily Carroll’s Speak: The Graphic Novel, which tells through words and pictures the story of Melinda Sordino, a girl who is raped just prior to beginning her freshman year in high school.

Generalized Random Context Picture Grammars: The State of the Art

2012
Generalized random context picture grammars (grcpgs) are a method of syntactic picture generation. The terminals are subsets of the Euclidean plane and the replacement of variables involves the building of functions that will eventually be applied to terminals. Context is used to permit or forbid production rules.

Picture Languages: From Wang Tiles to 2D Grammars

2009
The aim of this paper is to collect definitions and results on the main classes of 2D languages introduced with the attempt of generalizing regular and context-free string languages and in same time preserving some of their nice properties. Almost all the models here described are based on tiles.

The analysis of two-dimensional patterns using picture processing grammars

Proceedings of the second annual ACM symposium on Theory of computing - STOC '70, 1970
A method for the description of the hierarchical structure of two-dimensional pictures is proposed. The model is called picture-processing grammar. It can be regarded as an extension of phrase-structure grammars to the two-dimensional case. A picture analysis program is described.

Regular expressions and context-free grammars for picture languages

1997
We introduce a new concept of regular expression and context-free grammar for picture languages (sets of matrices over a finite alphabet) and compare and connect these two formalisms.

Pure 2D Picture Grammars (P2DPG) and P2DPG with Regular Control

2008
In this note a new model of grammatical picture generation is introduced. The model is based on the notion of pure context-free grammars of formal string language theory. The resulting model, called Pure 2D context-free grammar (CFG), generates rectangular picture arrays of symbols.

The use of pictures for interactional purposes and the grammar of social interaction

Journal of Interactional Research in Communication Disorders, 2017
This conversation analytic study investigates the introduction of pictures in sequence initial position in Atypical Interaction across institutional and private settings. The pictures share two main features; they are paper-based and they can be manipulated by hand.
