Data‐driven performance metrics for neural network learning

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView., 2023
Summary Effectiveness of data‐driven neural learning in terms of both local mimima trapping and convergence rate is addressed. Such issues are investigated in a case study involving the training of one‐hidden‐layer feedforward neural networks with the extended Kalman filter, which reduces the search for the optimal network parameters to a state ...

A Piecewise-Conserved Constant of Motion for a Dissipative System [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We discuss a piecewise-conserved constant of motion for a simple dissipative oscillatory mechanical system. The system is a harmonic oscillator with sliding (dry) friction. The piecewise-conserved constant of motion corresponds to the time average of the

Improved ZZ A Posteriori Error Estimators for Diffusion Problems: Conforming Linear Elements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In \cite{CaZh:09}, we introduced and analyzed an improved Zienkiewicz-Zhu (ZZ) estimator for the conforming linear finite element approximation to elliptic interface problems. The estimator is based on the piecewise "constant" flux recovery in the $H(div;

Piecewise-linear and birational toggling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We define piecewise-linear and birational analogues of the toggle-involutions on order ideals of posets studied by Striker and Williams and use them to define corresponding analogues of rowmotion and promotion that share many of the properties of ...

Waveforms for Gravitational Radiation from Cosmic String Loops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We obtain general formulae for the plus- and cross- polarized waveforms of gravitational radiation emitted by a cosmic string loop in transverse, traceless (synchronous, harmonic) gauge.

Piecewise monotone interpolation

open access: yesJournal of Approximation Theory, 1977
AbstractIn reaction to a recent paper by E. Passow in this Journal, it is shown that broken line interpolation as a scheme for piecewise monotone interpolation is hard to improve upon. It is also shown that a family of smooth piecewise polynomial interpolants, introduced by Swartz and Varga and noted by Passow to be piecewise monotone, converges ...

On shuffle products, acyclic automata and piecewise-testable languages

open access: yes, 2019
We show that the shuffle $L \unicode{x29E2} F$ of a piecewise-testable language $L$ and a finite language $F$ is piecewise-testable. The proof relies on a classic but little-used automata-theoretic characterization of piecewise-testable languages.

Piecewise contractions

open access: yesErgodic Theory and Dynamical Systems
Abstract We study piecewise injective, but not necessarily globally injective, contracting maps on a compact subset of ${\mathbb R}^d$ . We prove that, generically, the attractor and the set of discontinuities of such a map are disjoint, and hence the attractor consists of periodic orbits.

Piecewise algebraic functions

open access: yesAdvances in Applied Mathematics, 1990
AbstractThis paper contains a thorough study of piecewise algebraic sets and functions. They are built up using finitely many parts, each of which is defined by finitely many algebraic equations or inequalities. They occur naturally in many concrete situations which are demonstrated by applications in linear algebra, complexity theory, and meromorphic ...
