Piecewise affine approximations for functions of bounded variation

open access: yes, 2015
BV functions cannot be approximated well by piecewise constant functions, but this work will show that a good approximation is still possible with (countably) piecewise affine functions.

Rapid and Direct Detection of Methamphetamine in Biofluids using a MXene‐Enabled Electrochemical Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A MXene‐enhanced electrochemical sensor enables the rapid and direct detection of methamphetamine. Molecular simulations reveal that specific MXene surface functional groups act as key signal amplifiers by facilitating interfacial interactions. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and robust performance in complex biological matrices.

Physics‐Embedded Neural Network: A Novel Approach to Design Polymeric Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Traditional black‐box models for polymer mechanics rely solely on data and lack physical interpretability. This work presents a physics‐embedded neural network (PENN) that integrates constitutive equations into machine learning. The approach ensures reliable stress predictions, provides interpretable parameters, and enables performance‐driven, inverse ...

Design for flexibility: An adjustable robust optimization approach with decision‐dependent uncertainty

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Flexibility is a crucial characteristic of industrial systems that face increasing volatilities and is therefore essential to ensure feasible operation under uncertainty. Flexibility is often closely tied to the design of a system, and careful consideration must be taken to understand the trade‐off between design cost and operational ...

Global Solutions to the Spherically Symmetric Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Density-Dependent Viscosity and Discontinuous Initial Data

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2014
We consider the initial boundary value problem for the spherically symmetric isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity coefficients and discontinuous initial data in this paper. For piecewise regular initial density

Factorization Machine‐Based Active Learning for Functional Materials Design with Optimal Initial Data

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This work investigates the optimal initial data size for surrogate‐based active learning in functional material optimization. Using factorization machine (FM)‐based quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) surrogates and averaged piecewise linear regression, we show that adequate initial data accelerates convergence, enhances efficiency, and ...

Simplifying activations with linear approximations in neural networks

open access: yesMemories - Materials, Devices, Circuits and Systems
A key step in Neural Networks is activation. Among the different types of activation functions, sigmoid, tanh, and others involve the usage of exponents for calculation.

On practical ℎ-observer design for nonlinear non-autonomous dynamical systems with disturbances [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Control Sciences
In this paper, a particular form of practical ℎ-observers for piecewise continuous Lipschitz, one-sided piecewise continuous Lipschitz systems and quasi-one-sided piecewise continuous Lipschitz systems is extended to nonlinear non-autonomous dynamical ...

A Novel Parameter Estimation Method for Pneumatic Soft Hand Control Applying Logarithmic Decrement for Pseudo‐Rigid Body Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
In this research, a paradigm of parameter estimation method for pneumatic soft hand control is proposed. The method includes the following: 1) sampling harmonic damping waves, 2) applying pseudo‐rigid body modeling and the logarithmic decrement method, and 3) deriving position and force control.
