On the Derivation of Continuous Piecewise Linear Approximating Functions

INFORMS Journal on Computing, 2020
We propose mixed-integer programming models for fitting univariate discrete data points with continuous piecewise linear (PWL) functions. The number of approximating function segments and the locations of break points are optimized simultaneously.

Piecewise smooth interval maps with non-vanishing derivative

Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, 2000
We consider the dynamics of piecewise smooth interval maps $f$ with a nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If, in addition all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and

Sections in the bounded derived category of piecewise hereditary algebras

Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, 2023
Let [Formula: see text] be a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. We study sections in the Auslander–Reiten quiver of the categories of complexes of fixed size and in the Auslander–Reiten quiver of the bounded derived category. One of the aims of this work is to show where the indecomposable [Formula: see text]-modules can be

Calculating the derivative of piecewise functions

International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2015
Exercises involving the calculation of the derivative of piecewise defined functions are common in calculus, with the aim of consolidating beginners’ knowledge of applying the definition of the derivative. In such exercises, the piecewise function is commonly made up of two smooth pieces joined together at one point.

Variance of Load Estimates Derived by Piecewise Linear Interpolation

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1998
Piecewise linear interpolation (PLI) is used frequently in environmental studies to estimate missing data. However, to evaluate the reliability of these estimates, the variances of these interpolated values must be quantified. We propose a procedure to quantify this PLI variance, which involves establishing a semivariogram with coefficients that are ...
