Learning of Continuous and Piecewise-Linear Functions With Hessian Total-Variation Regularization
We develop a novel 2D functional learning framework that employs a sparsity-promoting regularization based on second-order derivatives. Motivated by the nature of the regularizer, we restrict the search space to the span of piecewise-linear box splines ...

Weighted $1\times1$ cut-and-project sets in bounded distance to a lattice
Recent results of Grepstad and Lev are used to show that weighted cut-and-project sets with one-dimensional physical space and one-dimensional internal space are bounded distance equivalent to some lattice if the weight function $h$ is continuous on the ...

Piecewise-linear-basis-function expansions
A new method of representing a signal using piecewise-linear basis functions has been described. The letter provides a very simple method of determining the expansion coefficients as linear combinations of samples of the signal.

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

On the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) peaks at intermediate soil organic carbon levels and declines thereafter. In carbon‐rich soils, the formation of stable mineral‐associated organic carbon is decoupled from microbial CUE.

Simplifying activations with linear approximations in neural networks
A key step in Neural Networks is activation. Among the different types of activation functions, sigmoid, tanh, and others involve the usage of exponents for calculation.
