Quasi‐Constant Time Gap in Multiple Rings of Elves

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
We present evidence that the time delay between the multiple rings of elves is not caused by the ground reflection of the electromagnetic pulse produced by intracloud lightning.

Ultrahigh Energy Neutrinos at the Pierre Auger Observatory

open access: yesAdvances in High Energy Physics, 2013
The observation of ultrahigh energy neutrinos (UHEνs) has become a priority in experimental astroparticle physics. UHEνs can be detected with a variety of techniques.

Determining Electric Fields in Thunderclouds With the Radiotelescope LOFAR. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Geophys Res Atmos, 2020
Abstract An analysis is presented of electric fields in thunderclouds using a recently proposed method based on measuring radio emission from extensive air shower events during thunderstorm conditions. This method can be regarded as a tomography of thunderclouds using cosmic rays as probes. The data cover the period from December 2011 till August 2014.

A brief history of image sensors in the optical

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 344, Issue 8-9, October-November 2023., 2023
Image sensors, most notably the Charge Coupled Device (CCD), have revolutionized observational astronomy as perhaps the most important innovation after photography. Since the 50th anniversary of the invention of the CCD has passed in 2019, it is time to review the development of detectors for the visible wavelength range, starting with the discovery of

Big Science Collaborations; Lessons for Global Governance and Leadership

open access: yesGlobal Policy, Volume 12, Issue 1, Page 66-80, February 2021., 2021
Abstract Big Science communities have been remarkably effective in evolving complex processes and mechanisms to enable international collaborations. Major powers such as the People's Republic of China, Russia and the USA, who are fierce rivals in other domains, form lasting alliances.

Multi-messenger studies with the Pierre Auger Observatory [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2023
The combination of data from observatories measuring ultra-high energy cosmic rays, photons, neutrinos and gravitational waves has provided new insights into the most extreme phenomena in the Universe.

A 3‐Year Sample of Almost 1,600 Elves Recorded Above South America by the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2020., 2020
Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic ...

A next-generation ground array for the detection of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays: the Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes (FAST) [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2019
The origin and nature of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is one of the most intriguing and important mysteries in astroparticle physics. The two largest observatories currently in operation, the Telescope Array Experiment in central Utah, USA, and ...

Where Is the Bottom of a Watershed?

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 56, Issue 3, March 2020., 2020
Abstract Watersheds have served as one of our most basic units of organization in hydrology for over 300 years (Dooge, 1988, https://doi.org/10.1080/02626668809491223; McDonnell, 2017, https://doi.org/10.1038/ngeo2964; Perrault, 1674, https://www.abebooks.com/first‐edition/lorigine‐fontaines‐Perrault‐Pierre‐Petit‐Imprimeur/21599664536/bd). TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 119-188, January 2020., 2020
Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people.
