Geotechnical Characteristic Assessments of Floodplain Soils Using SCPTU Data in Nanjing, China

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2022
In order to improve the understanding of such floodplain sediments and determining the validity of the tests, an extensive series of multifunctional seismic piezocone tests with pore pressure dissipation phase have been performed and supplemented with ...

Determination Permeability Coefficient from Piezocone [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2014
The permeability coefficient of soil profile is one of the problems concerned by engineers, and the determination of permeability coefficient method mainly relies on the laboratory permeability test and field pumping test, but these tests are time ...

Evaluation of Pile Lateral Bearing Capacity-Based on Cone Penetration Test Results

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering
To analyze the bearing capacity of pile foundations under horizontal loads, a new method based on the piezocone penetration test (CPTU) data for calculating pile p-y curves was proposed.

Dominant factors in MiniCone, CPT and pile correlations: A data‐based approach

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, Volume 2, Issue 4, Page 346-358, December 2023., 2023
Using a database comprising MiniCone and cone penetration test (CPT) records in the field and physical modeling with a variety of cone diameters, case study records have been obtained from 140 tests compiled from data from 26 sources. The sources include the results of 20 physical modelings and field data from six sites in 10 countries.

The effect of heterogeneities and small cavities on levee failures: The case study of the Panaro levee breach (Italy) on 6 December 2020

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 16, Issue 2, June 2023., 2023
Abstract This article discusses the levee failure that occurred on 6 December 2020 at Castelfranco Emilia, near Modena (Italy), showing that it cannot be explained without assuming the presence of local heterogeneities or a small cavity. The possible presence of these defects is supported by evidence derived from historical data and site observations ...

Sedimentary facies characterization through CPTU profiles: An effective tool for subsurface investigation of modern alluvial and coastal plains

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 70, Issue 4, Page 1302-1327, June 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT Cone penetration tests, a method that is typically used to determine the engineering properties of soils, can be used as an effective tool for refined subsurface stratigraphic investigations of alluvial and coastal plains, aside from the geographic location.

Deep Hydraulically‐Active Fractures in Sensitive Clay Deposits: Implications for Groundwater Flow and Slope Stability

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 50, Issue 9, 16 May 2023., 2023
Abstract Landslides in sensitive post‐glacial marine clays are one of the major geological hazards in Canada, Norway and Sweden. Current hydrogeological conceptual models used for slope stability analyses in these deposits consider simple groundwater flow conditions within a homogenous, isotropic, massive clay deposits, where fractures are surficial ...

Probabilistic approach for seismic microzonation integrating 3D geological and geotechnical uncertainty

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 310-334, February 2023., 2023
A novel probabilistic methodology for regional seismic site characterization is proposed and applied to a region with highly heterogeneous surficial geology and varying soil sediment thickness and stiffness. The method combines various sources of geological and geotechnical uncertainties to develop a three‐dimensional (3D) shear‐wave velocity (Vs ...

Compositional, micromorphological and geotechnical characterization of Holocene Tiber floodplain deposits (Rome, Italy) and sequence stratigraphic implications

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 69, Issue 4, Page 1705-1737, June 2022., 2022
Abstract This study reports a high‐resolution micromorphological characterization of floodplain deposits to investigate the relationships among compositional, textural and geotechnical data, and integrate soil micromorphology with sequence stratigraphy.

Non‐linear dynamic analysis of buildings founded on piles: Simplified modelling strategies for soil‐foundation‐structure interaction

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 51, Issue 4, Page 744-763, 10 April 2022., 2022
Abstract The paper investigates the problem of Soil‐Foundation‐Structure Interaction (SFSI) for buildings supported on piles through the comparative analysis between the fixed base and the compliant base assumptions. The structure, a nine‐storey residential building (with or without infills), is modelled in non‐linear regime while the piled foundation ...
