Since the first report of a cloned animal (Dolly the sheep) 3 years ago, cloning mammals has become something of a cottage industry. As Prather discusses in his Perspective, pigs can now be added to the august list of cloned animals, which includes cows, goats, and mice.

Electrocution was considered to have caused 28 deaths in a house of 109 fat pigs. Post mortem examination showed haemorrhages at varying sites. Another 35, showing varying degrees of paralysis, were sent for slaughter. In most of these the pelvis was fractured and in some the vertebral column in the lumbosacral region.

The welfare of pigs during transport depends on many interacting factors, such as the condition of the animal, temperature, loading density, time in transit and other factors. Death losses during transport of pigs can vary from a low of 0.06% under good conditions to a high of 6.8% under very hot conditions.

IN recent years, many viruses have been recovered from the alimentary tract of man and the term ‘enteroviruses’ has been proposed1 as a group name for them. The enterovirus group comprises the three strains of poliomyelitis virus, the Coxsackie viruses and the Echo (enteric cytopathogenic human orphan) viruses.

Hepatocholangioadenoma in a pig
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 1992A Landrace sow had several neoplastic nodules in the liver. Histopathologically, the individual nodules consisted of two types of closely associated neoplastic cells; one was of hepatocellular type, the other of cholangiocellular type. Based on this finding, the term "hepatocholangioadenoma" is considered to be appropriate for this tumour.
