Sow-Piglet Nose Contacts in Free-Farrowing Pens

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Nose contact is a frequent form of social behaviour in pigs, but the motivational reasons underlying this behaviour remain unclear. We investigated the frequency, direction and type of sow–piglet nosing behaviour and its association with sow and ...

Alternative farrowing systems: design criteria for farrowing systems based on the biological needs of sows and piglets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The construction of a suitable farrowing environment is a continuing dilemma: the piglet's needs must be matched with those of the sow and the farmer during the main phases that constitute farrowing: nest building, parturition and lactation. Difficulties

Management of Piglet Anaemia

open access: yes, 2022
The swine industry played most important role in north east and some other parts of India. The pig is mostly reared for meat production, so it is essential to provide proper care to pigs especially during farrowing and after farrowing.

Effects of socialising piglets on sow and piglet performance and behaviour of entire male piglets [PDF]

open access: yesanimal
Entire male pigs show more aggressive behaviour and mounting than female pigs. By sorting growing pigs into male and female pens, at least half of the pigs are protected from the aggressive behaviour and mounting of the entire males. Mixing of unknown pigs provokes them to perform such behaviours which increase the risk for injuries.

The Extracellular Vesicle Citrullinome and Signature in a Piglet Model of Neonatal Seizures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Neonatal seizures are commonly associated with acute perinatal brain injury, while understanding regarding the downstream molecular pathways related to seizures remains unclear.

Congenital Fibropapillomatosis in a Piglet [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology, 1999
We report a case of congenital fibropapillomatosis in the head and neck of a piglet from a swine breeding farm where sporadic cutaneous papillomas of the prepuce and scrotum had previously occurred in several boars. Histologically, the tumor consisted of multiple exophytic, papillary projections composed of branching, densely cellular, fibrovascular ...

Alloxan Diabetes in the Piglet [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1957
LUKENS1 depancreatized young pigs, and found that the diabetic state which followed was characterized by a slight or absent fasting glucose-excretion, and a low fasting nitrogen-excretion. Ketonuria was marked, but was not accompanied by severe acidosis.

Optimization of piglet nest use under organic husbandry conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Nest use increased from the first to the third day after birth. The piglet nest was used more frequently during the day than at night, and piglets spent significantly more time in the piglet nest in winter than in summer.

Sow and piglet traits associated with piglet survival at birth and to weaning

open access: yesJournal of Animal Science, 2020
AbstractAbstractUnderstanding the relationship between sow and piglet characteristics that are associated with stillborn rate and preweaning mortality is beneficial as litter size continues to increase. Two experiments were previously conducted to evaluate prefarrowing nutrition regimens on sow and litter characteristics.
