The role of the host—Neutrophil biology

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) are myeloid cells packed with lysosomal granules (hence also called granulocytes) that contain a formidable antimicrobial arsenal. They are terminally differentiated cells that play a critical role in acute and chronic inflammation, as well as in the resolution of inflammation and wound ...

Potent monoclonal antibodies against multidrug‐resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
A novel immunization strategy using a low‐virulence, multidrug‐resistant strain yields synergistic monoclonal antibodies against hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae. These antibodies provide cross‐serotype protection through a dual‐mechanism of pathogen clearance and immunomodulation, offering a promising non‐antibiotic therapeutic for resistant ...

Neonatal mortality in piglets: genetics to improve behavioural vitality

open access: yes, 2011
Maternal abilities and piglet vitality were analyzed on 24 Meishan (MS) and 24 Large White (LW) gilts. Females were inseminated with a mixture of semen from both breeds. Three MS and 3 LW boars were used to constitute 3 duos formed by mixing of MS and LW semen in equal proportions. Farrowing events were studied over 5 successive batches. The proportion

Harvest increase and culling as tools for managing chronic wasting disease in white‐tailed deer

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We used an agent‐based model to simulate the effect of CWD management on a white‐tailed deer population in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois. Our results suggest that wildlife managers should reconsider how and if they should manage CWD. Abstract Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that affects white‐tailed ...

Preclinical 1H MRS Study of a Porcine Model Shows Evidence and Mechanisms for Acute Neuronal Injury in Neonatal Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) Surgery

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Congenital heart disease affects 1% of US births, with some infants requiring cardiothoracic surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Optimal surgical parameters to minimize neuronal injury are unknown. We used serial 1H MRS in a neonatal CPB porcine model to assess acute neuronal damage and associated injury mechanisms.
