Harnessing Photo‐Energy Conversion in Nanomaterials for Precision Theranostics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Harnessing photo‐energy conversion in nanomaterials enables precision theranostics through light‐driven mechanisms such as photoluminescence, photothermal, photoelectric, photoacoustic, photo‐triggered surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and photodynamic processes. This review explores six fundamental principles of photo‐energy conversion, recent

Estimation of genetic and non-genetic effects influencing coat colour in black horses

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2019
The aims of this study are the quantitative characterisation of the coat colour in the black variety of the Old Kladruber Horse breed, the estimation of the coat colour genetic parameters, and the determination of the factors that influence coat colour ...

Ultraviolet-irradiated endothelial cells secrete stem cell factor and induce epidermal pigmentation

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Ultraviolet (UV)-associated hyperpigmented skins are characterized with increased vasculature underlying pigmentation, suggestive of the possible biological role of endothelial cells in the regulation of skin pigmentation during UV irradiation.

Designing Physical Unclonable Functions From Optically Active Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Assigning unforgeable “fingerprints” to manufactured goods is a key strategy to fight global counterfeiting. Optical physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are chemically generated random patterns of optically active materials serving as unique authenticators.

Duration of pairing and use of allosperm in Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) Duração do acasalamento e uso do aloesperma em Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropode: Planorbidae)

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1989
Virgin homozygous black pigmented and albino Biomphalaria glabrata are paired during a period varying from 1 to 20 days. The rate of cross-fertilized parents is statistically similar for the various lengths of pairing.

Genome-wide analysis of long non-coding RNAs at early stage of skin pigmentation in goats (Capra hircus)

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2016
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play roles in almost all biological processes; however, their function and profile in skin development and pigmentation is less understood.

Active Biopaste for Coral Reef Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Preserving coral reefs is essential. A conductive, hardening paste for coral attachment and mineral accretion technology is developed, using a bio‐based acrylate soybean oil matrix and graphene nanoplatelets. Corals are attached with and onto the conductive paste, electricity is applied, water electrolysis is induced, and calcium is deposited at the ...

Synthetic Chromatophores for Color and Pattern Morphing Skins

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopods use chromatophore organs (muscle‐actuated pigment sacs) to alter their skin color and pattern. Synthetic chromatophores, which closely mimic the mechano‐optical process found in cephalopods using stimuli‐responsive microscale hydrogel actuators, are reported.
