The role of geography, environment, and genetic divergence on the distribution of pikas in the Himalaya

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Pikas (Ochotona Link, 1795) are high‐altitude specialist species making them a useful bioindicator species to warming in high‐altitude ecosystem. The Himalayan Mountains are an important part of their range, supporting approximately 23%–25% of total pika

Monitoring Plateau Pika and Revealing the Associated Influencing Mechanisms in the Alpine Grasslands Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

open access: yesDrones
Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae, hereafter pika) is a key species in the alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). They are susceptible to the influence of external disturbance and may present great variation, which is important to ...

Functional evolution of leptin of Ochotona curzoniae in adaptive thermogenesis driven by cold environmental stress.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
BackgroundEnvironmental stress can accelerate the directional selection and evolutionary rate of specific stress-response proteins to bring about new or altered functions, enhancing an organism's fitness to challenging environments.

Moderate plateau pika activity had minor effect on ecosystem C and N in alpine grasslands

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae, hereafter pika) is an ecosystem engineer on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), whose activity exerts a profound effect on the ecosystem nutrient cycle of alpine grasslands.

Plateau pika fecal microbiota transplantation ameliorates inflammatory bowel disease manifestations in a mouse model of colitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a serious global public health concern. Although the pathogenesis of the disease is currently unknown, it has been reported to be associated with both intestinal microbiota and inflammatory mediators. There is evidence

Climate Tolerances and Habitat Requirements Jointly Shape the Elevational Distribution of the American Pika (Ochotona princeps), with Implications for Climate Change Effects. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Some of the most compelling examples of ecological responses to climate change are elevational range shifts of individual species, which have been observed throughout the world.

Experimental Stomach-ulcer on Pika

open access: yesExperimental Animals, 1990
Experimental gastric ulcer formation was performed in the pika and compared with that in the rat. Gastric ulcers were formed in pika that were subjected to water restraint for 4-5 days for 2 hours each day. Gastric ulcers were also formed under conditions of 1-4 days for 3 hours each day and 1-2 days for 5 hours each day.

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

Animal empathy reconsidered: a multidimensional profile account

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Empathy is the glue that holds societies together and yet several fundamental questions about empathy persist. What is empathy (the definitional question)? Is it uniquely human and, if not, which nonhuman animals possess empathy (the distribution question)? Which type or quality of empathy is realized in different species (the quality question)
