Shaft Resistance of Piles Driven in Clay: Field Study of an Instrumented Full Scale Pile

open access: yes, 1994
This paper presents the results of measurements of total stress against the shaft and base of a mandrel-driven cast-in-situ steel "Multiton" pile 57 m long, 508/457 mm in diameter, installed in NC clay. The pile was instrumented with 8 dilatometer cells (4 pairs at 6 m depth intervals) along the shaft and one dilatometer cell at the pile tip center ...

Analysis of shaft resistance of jacked piles in sands

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2010
AbstractIn recent years, pile jacking has become a viable alternative installation method for displacement piles. Pile jacking produces minimal noise, vibration and air pollution during installation. In addition, it is possible, at the end of jacking, to have a good estimate of the ultimate static capacity of the pile.

The shaft resistance of axially loaded piles in clay

Géotechnique, 1982
Most design procedures for estimating pile capacities are empirical in nature, and the mechanism of load transfer from a pile to the soil is not well understood. In this Paper the mobilization of shear stress along a rough pile shaft in normally consolidated clay is considered in terms of the effective stresses acting in the clay.

Drained-Undrained Shaft Resistance of Piles in Soft Clays

International Journal of Civil Engineering, 2020
The determination of the stress distribution around driven piles in soft clays constitutes a complex problem. The stress distribution is affected by a range of factors such as soil permeability, soil strength, sensitivity, remoulding, distance from adjacent piles and number of piles.

Side Resistance In Piles and Drilled Shafts

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2001
More than 20 years have passed since a Terzaghi Lecture focused on the topic of deep foundations. However, considerable research has been performed, and experience gained, in this subject area in the intervening period. The objective of this paper is to update the earlier references on deep foundations by summarizing results of important recent ...

A review of research on the shaft resistance of rock-socketed piles

Acta Geotechnica, 2020
Shaft resistance generally dominates at the service loads of rock-socketed piles and therefore is always a topic of large research interest. This paper reviews the research progress that has been made in the last four decades in understanding the shear mechanism of the pile–rock interface and in calculating the shaft resistance.

Shaft Resistance of Displacement Piles in Overconsolidated Cohesionless Soils

2018
The conventional theories for predicting the capacity of a single pile in sand produce wide range of discrepancies. This is mainly due to the complexity of modeling cohesionless material, collecting field data, and ignoring the effect of overconsolidation in cohesionless soils.

Prediction of the shaft resistance of nondisplacement piles in sand

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2012
SUMMARYUsing pile segment analysis, the mobilized shaft resistance of axially loaded nondisplacement piles in sand is investigated here. It is accepted that the shaft capacity of piles constructed in granular soils is highly influenced by the mechanical behavior of soil–structure interfaces forming adjacent the piles skin.

Shaft and base resistance of non-displacement piles in sand

Computers and Geotechnics, 2017
Abstract This paper presents the results of three-dimensional, finite element analyses performed with an advanced, two-surface-plasticity, constitutive sand model to investigate the response of non-displacement piles to axial loading. The analysis domain is carefully meshed such that the formation and evolution of shear bands next to the pile shaft ...

Shaft Resistance of Model Pile in Wet Soil

2011
The shaft resistance of smooth and rough model pile in wet sand, silt and clay under static loading is investigated experimentally in a pile-soil shaft resistance test apparatus. This apparatus allows independent control of the boundary stresses of a cylindrical soil specimen in the vertical and horizontal directions.
