Validation of self-report and hospital pill count using unannounced home pill count as methods for determination of adherence of antiretroviral therapy.

open access: yesTanzania Journal of Health Research, 2008
Adherence to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is very crucial for successful treatment outcomes. This study aimed to validate patient-self report (PSR) and hospital based pill count (HoPC) as adherence determination methods by using unannounced home visit pill count (HPC). The study was carried out at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Evaluation of Morisky Medication adherence scale (MMAS-8) in older adults of a primary health care center in Chile

open access: yesRevista Peruana de Medicina Experimental y Salud Pública, 2017

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A Prospective Study of Individuals at Risk of Multiple Sclerosis Informs the Design of Primary Prevention Studies

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective In multiple sclerosis, the optimal time for deploying a therapeutic intervention is before the central nervous system is damaged; given the success of trials treating the earliest stage of MS, the radiologically isolated syndrome, developing primary prevention strategies is an important next challenge.

Effects of Add‐On Icosapent Ethyl With Standard Treatment on Functional Outcomes and Inflammatory Biomarkers in Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Ischemic stroke, a major cause of mortality and long‐term disability, results from the abrupt cessation of cerebral blood flow due to vascular occlusion or rupture. Icosapent Ethyl (EPA‐EE), approved for hypertriglyceridemia, has anti‐inflammatory and antithrombotic properties that may lessen ischemic damage.

Computerised Pill Counting – how will technology support research into medication adherence? [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2008
Assessing adherence in individuals may be as simple as asking patients ‘How often do you take your medicines correctly?’ Health planners and policy makers are more concerned with the extent to which medications are taken in the whole population and what impact this has on the health of that population.
