Hermaphroditic spawning by the gonochoric pillar coral Dendrogyra cylindrus

Coral Reefs, 2018
Scleractinian corals typically reproduce sexually as either gonochoric (separate male and female) or hermaphroditic (producing both eggs and sperm) colonies. The Caribbean pillar coral Dendrogyra cylindrus has been classified as gonochoric, but multi-year spawning observations at a Florida Keys site revealed incidences of hermaphroditism.

Microsatellite loci for the plate-and-pillar coral, Porities rus.

Conservation Genetics Resources, 2011
Little is known about species and population-level genetic relatedness for many reef building corals, despite their critical importance as the foundation of coral reef ecosystems. We report the isolation and characterization of seven polymorphic microsatellites from the plate-and-pillar coral, Porites rus.

A versatile approach to processing of high active area pillar coral- and sponge-like Pt-nanostructures. Application to electrocatalysis

Journal of Materials Chemistry, 2011
A facile electrochemical processing method for Pt-based nanostructures with high surface area and a broad range of possible applications is proposed, based on sacrificial ZnO nanostructures. At first, ZnO-nanorods and nanobelts were grown on a TiO2 terminated steel substrate via a fast wet chemical method and subsequently sputter coated with an ultra ...

Temporal dynamics of black band disease affecting pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus) following two consecutive hyperthermal events on the Florida Reef Tract

Coral Reefs, 2017
Black band disease (BBD) affects many coral species worldwide and is considered a major contributor to the decline of reef-building coral. On the Florida Reef Tract BBD is most prevalent during summer and early fall when water temperatures exceed 29 °C.
