Gastrodin alleviates seizure severity and neuronal excitotoxicities in the rat lithium-pilocarpine model of temporal lobe epilepsy via enhancing GABAergic transmission.

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2020
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Temporal lobe epilepsy remains one of the most drug-resistant focal epilepsy, leading to enormous healthcare burden. Among traditional herb medicine, some ingredients have the potential to treat seizure and alleviate the ...

Topical pilocarpine for xerostomia in patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy.

Oral Diseases, 2020
OBJECTIVE To evaluate a pilocarpine spray as a treatment for xerostomia in patients treated with radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS This was a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover clinical trial of patients complaining of ...

Impairments in cognitive functions and emotional and social behaviors in a rat lithium-pilocarpine model of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Behavioural Brain Research, 2019
The aim of this study was to evaluate in detail behavioral patterns and comorbid disturbances in rats using the lithium-pilocarpine model. A comprehensive set of behavioral tests was used to investigate behavioral patterns, including the open field test,

Preconditioning with toll-like receptor agonists attenuates seizure activity and neuronal hyperexcitability in the pilocarpine rat model of epilepsy.

Neuroscience, 2019
Neuroinflammation plays an important role in epileptic disorders. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the key signal transduction tools by which neuroinflammation may promote epileptogenesis.

Benefits of long-term pilocarpine due to increased muscarinic acetylcholine receptor 3 in salivary glands.

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC, 2018
Hypofunction of the salivary gland causes several life-disrupting side effects such as dental caries, oral candidiasis, loss of taste, and swallowing disorders. No satisfactory therapy has been established to treat salivary hypofunction.

Pilocarpine

2007
Pilocarpine is a direct-acting parasympathomimetic agent exerting a broad spectrum of pharmacological actions mediated through muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. It is non-selective for the various muscarinic receptors and does not stimulate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Serum Pilocarpine Esterase Activity and Response to Oral Pilocarpine

Biochemical and Molecular Medicine, 1996
Pilocarpine is used orally to treat xerostomia but patients vary widely in their response and ability to tolerate this drug. To elucidate the potential pharmacokinetic contribution of serum to this variability, the enzymatic hydrolysis of pilocarpine in human serum in vitro was investigated using a stability indicating HPLC assay.
