Location-aware pilot assignment for massive MIMO systems in heterogeneous networks

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate the heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) where the macrocell base stations (MBSs) are equipped with very large antenna arrays. Since such a combined massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and HetNet system operates in the co-channel ...

Atomic Layer Deposition Processes: Versatile Platforms for Engineering ZnO‐Chitosan Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Vapour phase metalation (VPM), multiplied pulsed vapour phase infiltration (MPI), and O2 plasma‑enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) tailor Zn–chitosan (Zn‑CS) films. PEALD improves wettability and biocompatibility. MPI enhances semiconductor behavior. Antiseptic selectivity: VPM → E. coli; MPI → H. pylori.

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Hacking assignment practice: finding creativity and power in the fissures and cracks of learning and teaching

open access: yesJournal of Learning Development in Higher Education, 2016
This paper explores integrated peer mentoring in the context of offering students an element of choice in their assignments. We decided to undertake a pilot study with a group of first year undergraduate education-studies students who come from non ...

Intelligent Acousto‐Electrical Metamaterials (IAM) for Sound Source Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Our proposed metamaterial concept enables sound source detection using a single material, in contrast to conventional arrays that require dozens or even hundreds of transducers. We show that the coupled acoustic–vibrational–electrical responses in piezoelectric metamaterials give rise to topology‐governed charge transport, producing distinct voltage ...

Polymorph‐Specific Electronic Transduction in WO3 during Molecular Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐oxide polymorphs with similar surface chemistry can nevertheless exhibit distinct sensing properties. In γ‐ and ε‐WO3, analyte adsorption appears comparable; yet, only ε‐WO3 induces a pronounced lattice electronic perturbation that accommodates charge in sub‐conduction band minimum states.

Ammonium Salts as Curing Agents to Obtain Ionic Epoxy Resins With a Thermoplastic‐to‐Thermoset Transition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic epoxy networks are prepared using ammonium salts as hardeners, leading to a two‐stage curing process with a thermoplastic‐like intermediate. This uncommon behavior enables extrusion and fabrication of thermoplastic prepregs that can be cured into thermoset composites.
