Climate Change Projected to Increase Rates of Background Tree Mortality Across Eastern North America

Background tree mortality is the ambient, natural death of trees that occurs without major disturbances. Using data from more than 24,000 forest plots across Canada and the United States, we found that warmer temperatures are linked to higher background tree mortality for many common tree species in eastern North America.
