DNA‐based identification of anadromous fishes (Alosa spp., Family Clupeidae) in stomach contents of marine groundfish

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Using DNA techniques for prey identification is an emerging approach for enhancing the precision and accuracy of trophic information. We evaluated the effectiveness of DNA‐based prey identification in conjunction with visual stomach content analysis of commercially important groundfish in the nearshore Gulf of Maine, with a focus on ...

Complete mitochondrial genome and phylogenetic analysis of the Weddell seal, Leptonychotes weddellii

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2020
The Weddell seal, Leptonychotes weddellii, which belongs to the family Phocidae, is an abundant pinniped that inhabits the Antarctica. Here, we present the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of L. weddellii. The total length of the mitogenome is

Genomic Characterization of Picornaviruses Isolated From Ribbon (Histriophoca fasciata) and Harbor (Phoca vitulina) Seals

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2020
The seal picornavirus 1, species Aquamavirus A, is currently the only recognized member of the genus Aquamavirus within the family Picornaviridae. The bear picornavirus 1 was recently proposed as the second species in the genus under the name aquamavirus

Seasonal Occurrence of the White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, in Waters off the Florida West Coast, with Notes on its Life History [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is considered rare in the Gulf of Mexico; however, recent longline captures coupled with historical landings information suggest that the species occurs seasonally (winter-spring) within this region. We examined a

Biogeography and taxonomy of extinct and endangered monk seals illuminated by ancient DNA and skull morphology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Extinctions and declines of large marine vertebrates have major ecological impacts and are of critical concern in marine environments. The Caribbean monk seal, Monachus tropicalis, last definitively reported in 1952, was one of the few marine mammal ...

Secondary cartilage in the murine medial pterygoid plate has a critical role in the pathfinding of the tensor veli palatini

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The development of the medial pterygoid plate (MPP) is followed in mouse embryos, highlighting its neural crest origin and complex development via both endochondral and membranous ossification. Using transgenic mice, the secondary cartilage of the MPP is shown to direct the path of the tensor veli palatini.

Sealpox Virus in Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Facilities, North America, 2007–2009

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
Sealpox, a zoonotic disease affecting pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), can occur among captive and convalescing animals. We surveyed 1 worker each from 11 marine mammal centers and interviewed 31 other marine mammal workers to ascertain their knowledge ...

Understanding marine biodiversity patterns and drivers: The fall of Icarus

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Biodiversity patterns are fundamental in our understanding of the distribution of life, ecosystem function, and conservation. In this concept analysis, A survey of the existing knowledge on marine biodiversity patterns and drivers across latitudes, longitudes, and depths indicates that none of the postulated patterns represent a rule.
