Spiders in the mosaic: How habitat heterogeneity and structure drive local spider diversity in a Mediterranean forest

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We assessed alpha‐ and beta‐diversity patterns of spiders across different forests and across vegetation layers (ground, shrub, low canopy) at local spatial scales across various Mediterranean forest types. Across forests, alpha‐diversity increased with habitat heterogeneity, which also drove beta‐diversity patterns across plots .

Short communication: The effect of changing temperature and agar concentration at proliferation stage in the final success of Aleppo pine somatic embryogenesis

open access: yesForest Systems, 2018
Aim of the study: The effect of physical and chemical conditions at proliferation stage was evaluated in order to elucidate if this stage is the determinant phase to induce a marked effect in Pinus halepensis somatic embryogenesis.

First report of an adelgid from Malta (Hemiptera, Aphidoidea, Adelgidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In recent years, the aphid fauna of the Maltese Islands has received considerable attention. miFSud et al. (2011) reviewed earlier works on the subject and provided information on previously reported species and on several new records. An updated list of

Elevation, rather than land use, causes important dietary shifts in the Mediterranean golden eagle

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
In an ever‐changing landscape, golden eagles in the Iberian Peninsula demonstrate remarkable dietary adaptability. We monitored 50 distinct breeding events over 4 years using camera traps, collecting over 520 000 images. Elevation, rather than land use, emerged as the main driver of prey composition: lagomorphs and columbiforms dominated at lower ...

Stand-level drivers of tree-species diversification in Mediterranean pine forests after abandonment of traditional practices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The progressive abandonment of traditional forest management over the last few decades has led to significant densification processes in most Mediterranean pine stands.

Shaping future forests: how can ecophysiology support climate‐smart forest management?

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 2778-2813, June 2026.
Summary Climate change, particularly the associated increase in extreme events and disturbances, threatens the numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits that forests provide, both locally and globally. Heat and drought pose significant risks to forest ecosystems; the anticipated future climate is expected to exacerbate this trend ...

Projected Evolution of Climatic Aridity in Spain: Robust Signals and Model Uncertainties

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 6, May 2026.
This study examines the projected evolution of climatic aridity in Spain throughout the 21st century, using the UNEP Aridity Index and CMIP6 simulations under different emission scenarios and global warming levels. Despite model biases, results show a general increase in aridity across the country, particularly in southern regions and the Canary ...

Phytochemical analysis, and antioxidant, anti-hemolytic and genoprotective effects of Quercus ilex L. and Pinus halepensis Mill. methanolic extracts [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy & Pharmacognosy Research, 2019
Context: Quercus ilex and Pinus halepensis are largely used in Algerian folk medicine as a remedy for different health problems. Aims: To determine the phytochemical composition as well as to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-hemolytic and genoprotective

Effect of two successive wildfires in Pinus halepensis stands of central Greece [PDF]

open access: yesWeb Ecology, 2008
We estimated differences, five years after a wildfire, in soil and vegetation between Pinus halepensis stands that were once burnt (1998) and stands that were burnt twice in a short time interval (1995 and 1998), in the area of Penteli, central Greece.

Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) associated with native trees in Malta (Central Mediterranean) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In the present study 25 aphid species which are known to be associated with trees in the Maltese Islands are recorded. Of these, 18 species represent new records; these include Aphis craccivora, Brachyunguis tamaricis, Cavariella aegopodii ...
