Potential for monetisation and utilisation of wood raw material from pioneer tree species stands in the Czech Republic

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science
Pioneer tree species in the Czech Republic include birch, alder and aspen. From an economic point of view, birch seems to be the most promising. Greater use of timber from pioneer tree species in higher value-added products is currently limited by the ...

Response of tropical peat swamp forest tree species seedlings to macro nutrients

open access: yesJournal of Wetlands Environmental Management, 2015
Efforts of restoration of degraded tropical peat swamp forest were facing constraints due to the low available nutrient level of peat. The transplanted peat swamp forest species seedlings experienced low survival rate and poor growth performance.

Ecophysiology germination of Senna uniflora seeds: species for recovery degraded areas

open access: yesJournal of Seed Science, 2020
: Studies on seeds ecophysiology are important to understanding of adaptation mechanisms and of species´ tolerance limits to natural conditions, because determine the potential of use in recovery plans of degraded areas.

Are pioneering coyotes, foxes and jackals alien species? Canid colonists in the changing conservation landscape of the Anthropocene [PDF]

open access: yesOryx, 2019
AbstractThe pervasive influence of human agency on biodiversity in the Anthropocene gives rise to several new challenges for national and international wildlife law, including questions regarding what is natural and what is alien. Ultimately, a new vision and new rules are called for but in the meantime wildlife lawyers and other conservation ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Frugivory and seed dispersal of Miconia theaezans (Bonpl.) Cogniaux (Melastomataceae) by birds in a transition palm swamp: gallery forest in Central Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
The objective of this study was to evaluate potential avian dispersers of Miconia theaezans by dietary habits in the Cerrado of Central Brazil. Forty-two hours and 40 minutes of focal tree observation were conducted between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Vegetation Recovery of Logged-over Dipterocarp Forests In Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

open access: yesFloresta e Ambiente, 2019
Forest utilization usually has an impact on changes in forest structure and species composition. The species of trees selected and ecosystem management system that refer to biodiversity characteristics will be explained by better knowledge of Functional ...

Sobrevivência e crescimento de espécies tropicais madeireiras em consórcio com espécie pioneira em diferentes proporções. Survival and growth of tropical timber species intercropped with pioneer species in dierent proportions. [PDF]

open access: yesRevista do Instituto Florestal, 2015
O cultivo de espécies florestais nativas com fins comerciais em plantios monoespecíficos vem sendo estudado há algumas décadas no Brasil. A silvicultura por meio de plantios consorciados, porém, raramente tem sido objeto de estudo.

Dynamics of natural regeneration after disturbance in a remnant of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest in southern Brazil

open access: yesRevista Ambiente & Água, 2021
This study evaluated changes in the structure for remnant Mixed Ombrophilous Forest recovering from logging, which ceased over 40 years ago. Regarding the dynamics of the floristic composition of natural regeneration, 18 species remained (23.38% of the ...

Wave effects on seedling establishment of three pioneer marsh species: survival, morphology and biomechanics [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Botany, 2019
AbstractBackground and AimsIt is important to have an in-depth mechanistic understanding of tidal marsh establishment and dynamics to ensure the long-term persistence of these valuable ecosystems. As wave forcing may be expected to impact seedling establishment, we studied the effect of water-imposed drag forces on seedling survival, morphology and ...
