A comparative analysis of plastome evolution in autotrophic Piperales

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany
AbstractPremiseMany plastomes of autotrophic Piperales have been reported to date, describing a variety of differences. Most studies focused only on a few species or a single genus, and extensive, comparative analyses have not been done. Here, we reviewed publicly available plastome reconstructions for autotrophic Piperales, reanalyzed publicly ...

Utility of Ontogenetic and Conventional Characters in Determining Phylogenetic Relationships of Saururaceae and Piperaceae (Piperales)

Systematic Botany, 1993
Morphological and developmental evidence is utilized in a phylogenetic analysis of Piperales. Best resolution of trees was obtained by combining ontogenetic data with conventional morphological data. Floral ontogeny provides a means to determine homology among character states as well as to provide additional characters not observable in mature flowers.

First record of Xanthaciura, Hendel (Diptera, Tephritidae) associate with flowers of Aristolochiaceae (Magnoliopsida, Piperales)

Revista Nordestina de Biologia, 2022
Xanthaciura (Tephritidae, Tephritinae) is a Neotropical genus composed of 17 species. Currently, to Brazil are recorded eight valid species names. The members of the Tephritinae are marked by their interaction with Asteraceae, as females lay eggs in the plant, where the larvae posteriorly feed and develop on various parts of the plant as capitulum ...

While Prosopanche (Hydnoraceae) flowers gently heat: mutualistic pollination relationships among the perianth-bearing Piperales

Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2023
Abstract Flowers of most Piperales do not reward pollinators. However, a few mutualistic pollination relationships have been proposed among the perianth-bearing species. To test the hypothesis of a mutualistic relationship between Prosopanche and beetle pollinators, we studied the pollination biology of three species (P.

Embryology of Manekia naranjoana (Piperaceae) and the origin of tetrasporic, 16‐nucleate female gametophytes in Piperales

American Journal of Botany, 2008
The vast majority of flowering plant seeds contain a triploid endosperm formed by fertilization of a monosporic, Polygonum‐type female gametophyte. However, evolutionary transitions to six other genetic constructs of endosperm are widespread, and six of seven known patterns are found in the order Piperales.

Floral Structure, Development, and Relationships of Paleoherbs: Saruma, Cabomba, Lactoris, and Selected Piperales

2007
The current strong interest in the group of taxa known as “paleoherbs” (Donoghue and Doyle, 1989) results from their aggregation at the base of the angiosperms based on morphological evidence (Donoghue and Doyle, 1989a, Donoghue and Doyle, 1989b) and molecular evidence (Zimmer et al., 1989; Hamby, 1990; Hamby and Zimmer, 1992; Chase et al., 1993).

Evolution of Piperales—matK gene and trnK intron sequence data reveal lineage specific resolution contrast

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2007
Piperales represent the largest basal angiosperm order with a nearly worldwide distribution. The order includes three species rich genera, Piper (ca. 2000 species), Peperomia (ca. 1500-1700 species), and Aristolochia s. l. (ca. 500 species). Sequences of the matK gene and the non-coding trnK group II intron are analysed for a dense set of 105 taxa ...

Comparison of vegetative anatomy of Piperales. II. Leaf.

Acta biologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, 1978
Many characters of leaf (hair, hypodermal cells, palisade layers, intercellular space, distinction between spongy and palisade parenchyma, "palisade ratio", distribution of collenchyma and sclerenchyma, presence or absence of starch grains, calcium oxalate crystals, number, shape and arrangement of bundles of petiole) are useful distinguishing ...

The formulation of the essential oil ofPiper aduncumLinnaeus (Piperales: Piperaceae) increases its efficacy as an insect repellent

Bulletin of Entomological Research, 2016
AbstractThe essential oil (EO) ofPiper aduncumLinnaeus, known as ‘sireh lada’ to locals Malaysian, has the potential to be used as an alternative to synthetic insect repellents such as N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. However, the EO's efficacy as a repellent decreases after application due to the high volatility of its active ingredients.

Floral MADS‐box protein interactions in the early diverging angiosperm Aristolochia fimbriata Cham. (Aristolochiaceae: Piperales)

Evolution & Development, 2019
Floral identity MADS‐box A, B, C, D, E, and AGL6 class genes are predominantly single copy in Magnoliids, and predate the whole genome duplication (WGD) events in monocots and eudicots. By comparison with the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, the expression patterns of B‐, C‐, and D‐class genes in stamen, carpel, and ovules are conserved in ...
