A monogenean parasite reveals the widespread translocation of the African clawed frog in its native range

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 11, Page 2670-2687, November 2022., 2022
Data from cointroduced, host‐specific parasites, as tags for translocation, can add value to investigations in invasion biology and conservation. A better understanding of the translocation history and resulting genetic mixing of host and parasite lineages in the native range can shed light on the genetic make‐up of parasite assemblages cointroduced to

Climate drives anuran breeding phenology in a continental perspective as revealed by citizen‐collected data

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 28, Issue 10, Page 2094-2109, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim As anuran reproduction is generally linked to the availability of water, frogs and toads are particularly sensitive to climate. We tested the effect of climate on anuran reproductive phenology and daily activity by analysing temporal patterns of reproductive behaviour based on citizen‐collected observations. Location Brazil.

Fossils Reveal Long-Term Continuous and Parallel Innovation in the Sacro-Caudo-Pelvic Complex of the Highly Aquatic Pipid Frogs

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2019
Within the already peculiar Bauplan of anurans, pipid frogs have evolved an array of bizarre features that are commonly linked to their highly aquatic lifestyle. Among the latter, there are several distinctive sacro-caudo-pelvic features shared by extant

Species composition and distribution of endemic frog species of Keffa, southwest Ethiopia

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2022
The present study was carried out to describe the species composition, diversity, distribution, and species richness of endemic frog species in the Keffa area, southwest Ethiopia. Data were collected during the wet and dry seasons from 2018 to 2021.

Low structural variation in the host-defense peptide repertoire of the dwarf clawed frog Hymenochirus boettgeri (Pipidae). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
THE skin secretion of many amphibians contains peptides that are able to kill a broad range of microorganisms (antimicrobial peptides: AMPs) and potentially play a role in innate immune defense. Similar to the toxin arsenals of various animals, amphibian

Host-Defense Peptides with Therapeutic Potential from Skin Secretions of Frogs from the Family Pipidae

open access: yesPharmaceuticals, 2014
Skin secretions from frogs belonging to the genera Xenopus, Silurana, Hymenochirus, and Pseudhymenochirus in the family Pipidae are a rich source of host-defense peptides with varying degrees of antimicrobial activities and cytotoxicities to mammalian ...

Perichordal Vertebral Column Formation in Rana kobai. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
In contrast to the previous study, centrum formation begins with a pair of ossification centers at the base of neural arches in Rana. At the early stage of intervertebral disc formation, a wedge‐like cartilage domain is observed posteroventral to the centrum. Evolutionary implications are discussed based on these observations.

Amphibians of Serra Bonita, southern Bahia: a new hotpoint within Brazil’s Atlantic Forest hotspot

open access: yesZooKeys, 2014
We studied the amphibian community of the Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN) Serra Bonita, an area of 20 km2 with steep altitudinal gradients (200–950 m a.s.l.) located in the municipalities of Camacan and Pau-Brasil, southern Bahia State, Brazil.

Mind the gaps: investigating the cause of the current range disjunction in the Cape Platanna, Xenopus gilli (Anura: Pipidae) [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2013
Low-lying areas of the Cape at Africa’s south-westernmost tip have undergone dramatic marine-remodelling, with regular changes in sea-level following glacial cycles.
