Previous evidence has indicated that the transmembrane signal in bacterial chemoeceptors is carried by the piston displacement of a membrane-spanning signaling helix. Hendrickson and coworkers (Cheung and Hendrickson, 2009; Moore and Hendrickson, 2009) now provide structural evidence that suggests piston transmembrane signaling is widely conserved in ...

Gas-to-hydraulic power converter [PDF]
A gas piston driven hydraulic piston pump is described in which the gas cycle is of high efficiency by injecting the gas in slugs at the beginning of each power stroke. The hydraulic piston is disposed to operate inside the as piston, and the two pistons,

Optically actuated two position mechanical mover [PDF]
An optically actuated mechanical mover adapted to be moved from an ambient position to an active position, is disclosed. The mechanical mover essentially comprises a piston/cylinder arrangement including a piston that is contained within an internal ...

Technological features of piston casting
The results of studies of obtaining complex castings from aluminum alloys using the self-filling method are presented. The influence of a number of technological parameters (pouring time, chill cooling mode, the use of self-filling, etc.) on the quality ...

Reversible compression of an optical piston through Kramers dynamics [PDF]
We study the reversible crossover between stable and bistable phases of an over-damped Brownian bead inside an optical piston. The interaction potentials are solved developing a method based on Kramers' theory that exploits the statistical properties of the stochastic motion of the bead. We evaluate precisely the energy balance of the crossover.

Lightweight piston architecture [PDF]
The invention is an improvement in a lightweight carbon-carbon composite piston, the improvement uses near-net shape knitted or warp-interlock preforms to improve the structural qualities of the piston.

The Fluidyne is a two-part hot-air engine, which has the peculiarity that both its power piston and displacer are liquids. Both parts operate in tandem with the common working gas (air) transferring energy from the displacer to the piston side, from which work is extracted.

The stochastic piston problem [PDF]
We obtain analytical solutions for the perturbed shock paths induced by time-varying random motions of a piston moving inside an adiabatic tube of constant area. The variance of the shock location grows quadratically with time for early times and switches to linear growth for longer times.
