This paper describes a prototype device to estimate the trajectory of the piston in a free-piston driver. The device, which screws to the front face of the piston, has an internal data acquisition system which triggers upon piston launch and records the acceleration history across the complete piston stroke.

The device has an electromagnetic induction based heating unit i.e. solenoid coil (12), arranged in a cup (21) of a piston, and adapted to realize heating cycles. A channel (13) of a cooling circuit is permanently supplied with a fluid at temperature lower than maximum temperature reached at the time of the heating cycles. The cooling circuit is placed
