A novel, high tensile modulus, fully aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide (LCPI) with better solvent resistance and thermal stability is synthesized. Tensile specimens are fabricated using both injection molding and FFF processes, accomplished via lower viscosity enabled by the LC phase.

Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

The Three-Dimensional Structure of Cassiopeia A [PDF]
We used the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Spectrograph to map nearly the entire extent of Cassiopeia A between 5-40 micron. Using infrared and Chandra X-ray Doppler velocity measurements, along with the locations of optical ejecta beyond the forward shock, we constructed a 3-D model of the remnant.

Zernike Piston Statistics in Turbulent Multi-Aperture Optical Systems [PDF]
There is currently a lack of research into how the atmosphere effects Zernike piston. This Zernike piston is a coefficient related to the average phase delay of a wave.

Omnidirectional Transmissive Acoustic Metasurfaces Based on Goldberg Polyhedra
This study introduces omnidirectional acoustic metasurfaces capable of manipulating wavefronts in multiple arbitrary directions simultaneously. A full‐stack pipeline for design, optimization, and fabrication is presented to construct near‐spherical holograms based on Goldberg polyhedra.

Concept, modeling, and performance prediction of a low-cost, large deformable mirror [PDF]
While it is attractive to integrate a deformable mirror (DM) for adaptive optics (AO) into the telescope itself rather than using relay optics within an instrument, the resulting large DM can be expensive, particularly for extremely large telescopes.

Motor‐Free Soft Robots for Cancer Detection, Surgery, and In Situ Bioprinting
Novel motor‐free soft robots for cancer detection, surgery, and in situ bioprinting–are presented. This master‐slave system is constructed from soft fibrous syringe architectures, removing the need for electrical motors and complex control mechanisms, while reducing the physical tremors.

Design Considerations for a Highly Segmented Mirror [PDF]
Design issues for a 30-m highly segmented mirror are explored, with emphasis on parametric models of simple, inexpensive segments. A mirror with many small segments offers cost savings through quantity production and permits high-order active and ...
