Chrome plating of piston rings
Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1950The hardness of metallic chromium coupled with its corrosion resistance make it an admirable material for wear resistance, and it has been applied to many wearing parts with success.

A Study of Piston-Ring Lubrication
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1957This paper describes an experimental study of the lubrication between a one-ring piston assembly and a cylinder. Instantaneous friction forces of the piston assembly were recorded by means of a special apparatus with a stationary piston and a reciprocating liner.

Plastic piston rings for compressors
Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, 1971The use of plastics with a low frict ion coefficient in f r ic t ion units reduces power consumption and increases the life of machines. Carbon-graphi te mater ia ls (AO and AG) used in compres so r construction, mate r ia l s based on phenol formaldehyde res ins and graphite (antegmites ATM-1 and ATM-10), and filled Teflon ones (AFGM, AFG-80VS, FKN-14,

On the lubrication characteristics of piston ring under different engine operation conditions
Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 2019Purpose Currently, lubrication analysis of piston ring is generally done under engine rated operating condition. However, the engine (such as the vehicle engine) does not always operate in rated operating condition, and its operating condition changes ...

Piston-ring performance: limitations from cavitation and friction
International Journal of Structural Integrity, 2019Purpose Cavitation in piston-ring lubrication is studied as part of the performance of piston-ring assemblies. Cavitation degrades performance in engineering applications and its effect is that it alters the oil film pressure, generated at the ...

The elastohydrodynamic lubrication of piston rings
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1983The piston seal that separates the hostile environment of the combustion chamber from the crankcase that contains the lubricant is an essential machine element in reciprocating engines. The sealing force pressing the piston rings against the cylinder liner varies with the combustion chamber pressure to form an effective self-adjusting mechanism.

Analysis of piston ring lubrication [PDF]
The hydrodynamic mechanism of piston ring-cylinder liner is complex and it is difficult to predict its efficiency at the design stage. Because of the critical nature of its duty, the piston ring has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations from many view points.

The Hydrodynamic Lubrication of Piston Rings
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Conference Proceedings, 1968Although the piston ring is a critical component in a reciprocating engine and although its successful functioning depends upon adequate lubrication, very little work has been done on the analysis of piston ring operation as a phenomenon of hydrodynamic lubrication.

2002
The tribological considerations in the contacts formed by the piston skirt, piston rings and cylinder liner have attracted much attention over several decades, not least indicated by the large number of articles published on this topic in recent years. Recent studies include modelling, miniaturised experimental work and full-scale engine testing.
