Function and Operation of the Facial Pit of the Pit Vipers

Noble and Schmidt1 have shown that the facial pit of the pit vipers (Crotalinae) is a sensory organ enabling the snakes to detect warm-blooded animals in absolute darkness. Their work indicates that this organ senses the radiation from the warm-blooded animals.

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial infection of the skin confined to the stratum corneum. The causative organism has not been identified. The clinical syndrome is distinct and is characterized by pits and superficial erosions in the pressure areas of the soles and in the lateral surfaces of the toes.
