Central pit craters on Ganymede
Icarus, 2011Central pit craters are common on Mars, Ganymede and Callisto, and thus are generally believed to require target volatiles in their formation. The purpose of this study is to identify the environmental conditions under which central pit craters form on Ganymede. We have conducted a study of 471 central pit craters with diameters between 5 and 150 km on

Blade Shape Optimization of Mars Helicopter Exploring Pit Craters
Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 78th Annual Forum, 2022Pit craters on Mars are assumed to be used as manned exploration bases and it is highly possible that life signature would be discovered there since its temperature is appropriate and it is less affected by radiation. Regarding pit crater exploration, helicopter which can climb and descend quickly is expected to be utilized.

Pit crater formation on Kilauea volcano, Hawaii.
Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1998Abstract Most of the known pit craters in Hawaii occur along the East and Southwest Rift Zones of Kilauea volcano. The pit craters typically are either astride a single rift zone fracture or between a pair of rift zone fractures. These fractures are prominent in the pit crater walls.

Origin of small pits in martian impact craters
Icarus, 2012We propose a numerical model for the formation of the closely-spaced pits found in the thin, ejecta-related deposits superposed on the floors, interior terrace blocks, and near-rim ejecta blankets of well-preserved martian impact craters. Our model predicts the explosive degassing of water from this pitted material, which is assumed to originally be ...

Hierarchical clustering of pit crater chains on Venus
Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2013Composed of a series of circular to elliptical bowl-shaped depressions, pit crater chains are common on the surface of many of our solar system’s terrestrial planets and moons. Using Magellan synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, four areas of Venus are examined in which a total of 354 pit crater chains are found: Ganiki Planitia (180°E–210°E, 25°N ...

The pit-craters and pit-crater-filling lavas of Masaya volcano
Bulletin of Volcanology, 2008Lava flowing into a pit crater will become entrapped to form an inactive lava lake. At Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) pit filling lavas are exposed in the walls of Nindiri, Santiago and San Pedro pits. Mapping of these lavas shows that fill can involve emplacement of both ’a’a and pahoehoe, with single fill units ranging in thickness from 2 to 22 m.

Distribution, morphology, and origins of Martian pit crater chains
Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, 2004Pit craters are circular to elliptical depressions found in alignments (chains), which in many cases coalesce into linear troughs. They are common on the surface of Mars and similar to features observed on Earth and other terrestrial bodies. Pit craters lack an elevated rim, ejecta deposits, or lava flows that are associated with impact craters or ...
