This article discusses pitch perception, beginning with a brief introduction to the function of the auditory system. It considers what limitations there are on our ability to extract frequency information from the sounds reaching our ears, and provides an orientation for some of the mechanisms described in the later sections.

The way we interpret a given set of sensory stimuli can depend very strongly on our choice of cues. The resulting ambiguity is particularly familiar in visual perception, and underlies many well-known visual illusions. It is shown that comparable ambiguities exist in the field of hearing, particularly pitch perception.

This paper describes a new method of quantitative determination of taste. In a special experimental situation S compares taste and pure tones. The latter are varied in pitch until S finds the pitch which characterizes the sample. The method is illustrated by results for two samples, Carlsberg Lager and Carlsberg Elephant Beer.
