Pitch Perception [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Neuroscience, 2012
Pitch is one of the primary auditory sensations and plays a defining role in music, speech, and auditory scene analysis. Although the main physical correlate of pitch is acoustic periodicity, or repetition rate, there are many interactions that complicate the relationship between the physical stimulus and the perception of pitch.

The Mechanics of Pitching [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 1987
The mechanical aspects of delivering a baseball pitch are presented. To organize the sequence of events involved in pitching, the kinematics are.explained by the phases the pitcher passes through during the delivery. There are four categories of delivering a pitch.

A Non‐Reciprocal Architected Porous Medium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In several fluid flow, energy‐dumping, and energy‐harvesting applications, a dominant flow direction or dominant resistance direction is desirable. In this study, we propose a simple modular geometry that doubles flow resistance in one direction relative to the opposite direction, while maintaining laminar viscous flow.

Exciton Binding Energy of Phosphorescent Emitter Molecules in Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Energy level alignment is key to efficient OLED design, yet determining LUMO energies remains challenging. A methodology based on field‐induced dissociation and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is presented to extract LUMO energies of iridium‐based phosphorescent emitters from their exciton binding energy.

Swelling‐Induced Stress‐Assisted Transfer of Nanodiamond Arrays With a PVA Carrier Tape for Conformal Bio‐Integrated Sensing and Labelling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a swelling‐induced, stress‐assisted water‐soluble PVA tape strategy to transfer‐print nanodiamond quantum‐sensor arrays onto soft, curved biological interfaces. The room‐temperature, water‐triggered process achieves >98% fidelity and residue‐free integration, enabling conformal quantum sensing on contact lenses, neural probes, and ...

Octave Bias in Pitch Perception: The Influence of Pitch Height on Pitch Class Identification [PDF]

open access: yesPerception, 2016
Pitch height and pitch class are different, but strictly related, percepts of music tones. To investigate the influence of pitch height in a pitch class identification task, we systematically analyzed the errors—in terms of direction and amount—committed by a group of musicians. The aim of our study was to verify the existence of constant errors in the

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

Modeling and control of a variable speed variable pitch angle prototype wind turbine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper focuses on modeling, control and simulation of a 500 KW horizontal axis prototype wind turbine that is being developed in the context of the MILRES (National Wind Energy Systems) Project in Turkey. The prototype turbine is designed as variable

Noise edge pitch and models of pitch perception [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2019
Monaural noise edge pitch (NEP) is evoked by a broadband noise with a sharp falling edge in the power spectrum. The pitch is heard near the spectral edge frequency but shifted slightly into the frequency region of the noise. Thus, the pitch of a lowpass (LP) noise is matched by a pure tone typically 2%–5% below the edge, whereas the pitch of highpass ...

Template‐Confined Synthesis of Shape‐Engineered Single‐Crystal Gold Microplates in Lithographically‐Defined Polymeric Patterns

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐crystal gold microplates are high‐performance nanomaterials with an impressive wafer‐based application space. Progress has, however, been tempered by an inability to exert synthetic control over microplate size, shape, and positioning. In this work, control over these parameters is demonstrated using a seed‐mediated synthesis that both confines ...
