When Pitch Falls Short: Reinforcing Prosodic Boundaries to Signal Focus in Japanese

open access: yesLanguages
This production study examines how Japanese speakers mark information structure through an Edge-Reinforcing Strategy—a prosodic system that signals focus via boundary-based cues, independently of lexical pitch accent or phrasing constraints.

Hydrocolloid‐Based Multiwavelength Stretchable QD‐OLED Patch for Simultaneous Neonatal Jaundice and Dermatitis Treatment with Biosignal Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Comparison of therapeutic and diagnostic applications of a surface‐emitting light source with multiwavelength emission characteristics. Abstract Conventional light‐emitting‐diode‐based light sources suffer from rigidity, localized heating, and poor adaptability to skin deformation, limiting their use in skin‐attached medical devices.

Discourse structure and information structure : interfaces and prosodic realization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In this paper we review the current state of research on the issue of discourse structure (DS) / information structure (IS) interface. This field has received a lot of attention from discourse semanticists and pragmatists, and has made substantial ...

Multivalent Protein Nanorings for Broad and Potent SARS‐CoV‐2 Neutralization

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A protein‐only, modular multivalent nanoscaffold displaying 20 anchor points, decorated with two different binders (10 of each), targeting the SARS‐CoV‐2 receptor‐binding domain is presented. The construct self‐assembles into stable, biocompatible, homogeneous nanoparticles, exhibit synergistic binding with fM IC50 values. It also detects spike at 9 ng

Spanish evidence for pitch-accent structure

open access: yesLinguistics, 2002
This paper considers the ability of the standard view of the pitch accent and two alternative views to account for the tonal-alignment data of two bitonal rising pitch accents in Spanish (one of which is used in cases of broad focus and the other in cases of contrastive focus).

A Hierarchically Structured, Stretchable, Anti‐Biofouling Encapsulation for Biodegradable Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, stretchable, anti‐biofouling encapsulant is developed by integrating organosilicon nanowire networks with microstructured biodegradable elastomers. The hierarchical surface exhibits superhydrophobicity and enhances water barrier properties by 420% over pristine polymers, while preserving mechanical integrity.

Correction by contrastive focus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
'Correction' is the name of a sentence with contrastive focus' the phonological/phonetic realization of which is a single contrastive pitch accent. These sentences predominantly appear in (fictional) dialogues. The first speaker uses grammatical entities

A Synovium‐on‐Chip Platform to Study Multicellular Interactions in Arthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The Synovium‐on‐Chip comprises a thin microporous PDMS membrane to support co‐culture of fibroblast‐like synoviocytes (FLS), THP‐1‐derived macrophages, and endothelial cells, enabling real‐time analysis of synovial‐vascular interactions. FLS migration through the pores drives endothelial remodeling, while TNF‐α stimulation induces robust inflammatory ...

Intonation and discourse : biased questions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper surveys a range of constructions in which prosody affects discourse function and discourse structure. We discuss English tag questions, negative polar questions, and what we call “focus” questions.

Real‐Time 3D Ultrasound Imaging with an Ultra‐Sparse, Low Power Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a novel, ultra‐sparse ultrasound architecture that paves the way for wearable real‐time 3D imaging. By integrating a unique convolutional array with chirped data acquisition, the system achieves high‐resolution volumetric scans at a fraction of the power and hardware complexity.
