Prograde zircon growth in migmatites

open access: yesJournal of Metamorphic Geology, Volume 41, Issue 5, Page 719-743, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Empirical studies of zircon in migmatites document features compatible with growth during heating at suprasolidus conditions. However, numerical modelling of zircon behaviour suggests that suprasolidus zircon is expected to grow only during cooling and melt crystallization.

Human decimation caused bottleneck effect, genetic drift, and inbreeding in the Canarian houbara bustard

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 87, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
We describe the genetic characteristics and dynamics, and the recent evolutionary history of the Canarian houbara bustard, an endemic to the Canary Islands. We identified high gene flow and two genetic units, with genetic bottlenecks and subsequent inbreeding in both of them, and propose potential management actions to avoid its extinction. Abstract An

Antler tine homologies and cervid systematics: A review of past and present controversies with special emphasis on Elaphurus davidianus

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 306, Issue 1, Page 5-28, January 2023., 2023

Abstract Following findings in Northern America of SARS‐CoV‐2 infections in white‐tailed deer, there is concern of similar infections in European deer and their potential as reservoirs of SARS‐CoV‐2 including opportunities for the emergence of new variants. UK deer sera were collected in 2020–2021 from 6 species and a hybrid with 1748 tested using anti‐

Species distribution models rarely predict the biology of real populations

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2022, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used in ecology. In theory, SDMs capture (at least part of) species' ecological niches and can be used to make inferences about the distribution of suitable habitat for species of interest. Because habitat suitability is expected to influence population demography, SDMs have been used to estimate a variety ...
